hey guys, my boss has a 1998 v8 hilux with a coil front end a standard springs with lifted coils over them. On his fishing truck he has 3 inch lifted coils over standard springs. Was wondering if anyone has done this on their zook. and if they liked it. boss said its got better flex and alot more comfortable |

sounds like it would make it super hard |

if you had the leafs as control arms so super light then just use the coils for bounce then it would work. But the car wuld have to be SPOA and very tall with track bar's' |

iv heard about this, pretty sure it is called "add a coil" meant to help when carrying heavy loads. is it only on the the rear diff? |

yeah its a hilux so its its spring over the leafs are very light but still good for carrying a load and the coils lift it and give it better travel. iv seen a few hiluxs with this set up but no zooks, was wondering if there are any? The coils set up on his fishing truck has the coil over the leafs all round. his comp truck has the coil over leaf rear and bundera coil front. |

The travel of a leaf spring is determined by the length of the spring. A coil spring jammed in there will do nothing to add wheel travel. The ability for a leaf spring to locate the axle is a function of the rate of the spring. If you remove leaves to reduce rate, it won't locate the axle properly any more, leading to axle wrap, bent springs etc. Seriously, coils over leaves are a terrible idea. Basic knowledge of how leaf suspension work makes this obvious. There's a couple of businesses that specialise in doing it though, and people still gut sucked in by the better ride/more wheel travel/better load carrying nonsense that they spend money on it. How can a spring that is "very light" still be "good for carrying a load" The physics just don't add up for these conversions. Steve. |

End thread, there is no real advantage to sticking coils over your leaf springs, unless you enjoy wasting money. Layto.... |

people still sell 50mm lift springs, offering better ride and travel.... It just doesn't happen |

Are you sure? I've owned/driven/worked on a large number of sierras that rode much better with 50mm lift springs than with stock springs. Steve. |

x2 my sierra was like driving with no suspension at all with stock. the ome suspention is so much better, the difference is incomparible. |

A 1998 hilux is IFS, it has double wish bone and torsion bar, no live axle or leaf springs. You should post a pic |

actually steve is not entirely correct in that putting the coil spring in series with the leaf will have an effect on the ride quality as the coil will be much softer than the leaves and give a much better ride when unloaded and then when loaded the coil compresses up and takes the initial load and then the leaves take the rest. it is in essence like having a variable rate coil (soft on top and progresivly harder) or the airbag leaf spring combination. |

You can also do this with secondary load leaves too, and no extra coil mount fabbing is required. |

proberbly because the old stuff was floged out and smashed in2 the bump stops all the time.. my coily however rides 1000X better with lifted coils and shocks because the old stuff was shagged |
