i decided to fill my stock coily sierra up with 98 octane the other day instead of the usual 91 cheapo fuel the difference was outstanding, usually when im accelerating hard onto the freeway it wuld make some horrible sounds like it was struggling. With 98 octane it revs so smoothly like its running on fabric softner and so far im getting better fuel economy too, not sure exactly but it seems to be better, will update when i know what fuel do you guys use and why? (other than deisel, its the fuel of satan) |

i run my M13A jimny on 98. The jim motor is specified to run a minimum of 95 octane and if you do run anything lower (which I have had to in some circumstances) - it runs horribly. You will definitely notice an decrease in fuel consumption, depending on the car it will go a decent way to offsetting the price difference too. |

If you tune them for 98, you will notice a far greater difference. 98 is a slow burning fuel, so to gain maximum benefit, advance the timing. All my cars run on 98, I would never use lesser fuel, as well as boat, mower and chainsaw. |

Hmmm this is very interesting... Here on the West Coast there is about 10 to 15cents difference in standard unleaded, and super unleaded, so on a Vitara tank of 40 litres thats about $5 to $6 extra per tank for super unleaded... One other way round this, that i have and still do use, is to by a 1 litre bottle of what is a product called " Flash Lube ", Aussie made, its a valve saver/lead replacement, but the blurb on the bottle says, " Protects valve and seats, increases economy, cleans injectors and fuel system, upper cylinder lubricant, reduces emmisions, increases engine life, reduces engine temp ", but i have also noticed that it does increase power, and acceleration ! A 1 litre bottle costs between $15 and $20, and you use 50mls per 50 litre tank, so that works out at 50 to 75cents per tank... or as the bottle says, treats 1,000 litres ! Another old bushmans trick, is to put a cup of Metholated Spirits into your tank about every 3rd fill up, it is used to disperse moisture/water in the tank, but also gives the fuel extra kick ! I use both of these methods, which gives my G16A Vitara engine more zip, which i love ! I am wondering if using super unleaded would give me enough economy, to offset the extra $5 per tank fill... how much more km per tank are you getting now ? |

Most suzukis for some reason like to detonate on 91 octane. Every sierra I have ever driven has pinged on a hot day unless running premium or 98 fuel. I have no idea why this is so.. I wouldn't recommend advancing the timing without making sure the fuel mix is stoich. You will need a gas anyliser and probably some jet changes to the carby. For those with EFI, using a wide band O2 Sensor whilst playing with the timing should help tune the motor safely. But don't go expecting any massive power gains from 98, even once tuned. Its unlikely to give more than 2-3 RWHP, but you may see better economy, and get a 'seat of the pants' power gain. If nothing else, 98 and a good tune is worth doing just to prolong your motors life. i decided to put 98 octane and top it up with a bottle of octane boost in my sierra today and it says 100mls to a tank but i desided to tip the whole bottle 750mls in and now she's powering around the streets! she's giving off a bit of a pong smell out the back end tho haha |

Going by the seat of my pants, and a timing light, an advance of 3.5 degrees of initial timing has made a wonderful difference to power, torque. The little beasty will hang on far longer, and outperforms my mates suzi with ease. Fuel economy, no idea, its not used on the road much. |

I noticed mine pinging the other day, so I filled up with 98... It stopped pinging and ran really well. Hard to know if I got more range, as a lot of the first day was spent in low range... |

advance the timming! proably got like 120octance rating! would defently notice a difference if you did the timing! |

Just lie to point out that ' Metho' is ethanol and Methanol is something else, there is a lot of confusion about this. Its cheaper to get e10 than it is to self mix. A litre of ethanol is $4 or so and would let you add it to 9 litres of petrol to make an equivalent to 10l of e10. Given that 98 Ron e10 at United Petrol is only 10-15c dearer than plain unleaded you would be ripping yourself off $1.50 or more for every 10l I alternate between vortex 95/ vortex 98 and 95 ron e10, the local station does the 95 for the same price as others do 91. It may be coincidence but if i stick to any one of the three my fuel economy and power seems to slacken but filing up everytime i am half full with alternating petrol seems to work (i may have avacuum problem |

This is the first i have heard of Ethanol being available at the pump, where do you get that ? I havnt heard of it being anywhere in Perth ? So the fuel companies are BS us, selling us a lower octane, so we need to use more of it, but giving us the option of a higher octane fuel, but charging alot more for it, jezz they win all round ! Unless we can start cheaply making our own fuel, i will stick to what i am doing now... Diesel has it advantages, even though i dont like it, at least you can use old Fish and Chip oil to run it on, or basically any oil with mods really... he he... Has there ever been a Diesel Zook ?... |

E grade fuel has been around for years, it must be in Perth. E stands for Ethanol, and the 10 or 15, whatever, is the percentage of ethanol in it. So E10 is petrol with 10% ethanol in it. Expect a slight drop in milage with E10, but, this should be well and trull offset by a lower price. If you want to do it properly, get someone who knows how, and tune your car for ethanol blend, it will increase performance. |

Has there ever been a Diesel Zook ?... Plenty of diesel Sierras about, just not in Aus. The popular choice is the VW 1.9 turbo motor. It's only the old mechanical diesels that will run on chip oil, try putting it in a common rail and you'll be up for about $8,000 in repairs. |

That is great for carbys, but I thought metho doesn't break down water droplets small enough to stop the water damaging fuel injectors? I imagine a fuel treatment would be a lot safer than metho in that case. |

i think fuel treatment is 90% metho anyway. I notice everything is listed as hydro-carbons... very vague. As for E10 its been around for ages... e85 on the otherhand is only available at 2 stations i know of sydney. Given its usually $1 litre puting 3.8l with 35l of 91 petrol would be cheaper than 95/98, what actual octane rating you get is academic. (i'd like to point out you would be missing in other non-octane related additives) |

Blended fuel, as in that with ethanol does give lower fuel milage, but, if tuned for ethanol, gives better performance. With a 1.3l, everything is a help. |

I just checked about Ethanol blend fuels in Perth, and the result was - " At this stage, there is no ethanol-blended fuel for sale at service stations in WA "... Apparently, only QLD, NSW and ACT have Ethanol blend fuels, supplied by BP... Maybe Gas conversion is the way to go, i had an old Holden PV work car that was Gas converted, i had some work done on the engine once, and the mechanic asked me if the engine was new, apparently Gas, cuts down the amount of carbon build up in the engine dramatically ! But the tank size and cost for conversion, around 1 to $2000, is a put off, mind you, at 55cents per litre, alot would be saved... I dont know what the Octane rating of Liquified Natural Gas is, but it sure made my old Holden PV fly along ! lol... |
