What's the go with setting the timing on a G16b? I have been told I need to bridge some of the terminals in the diagnostic plug to set static timing. If so, which ones? Is it supposed to be set at 10BTDC? |

Yeah you are, I just wound mine till it pinged and backed it off some, no bridging required |

OK thanks Royce, that's what I would have done eventually.. I managed to find it in the FSM in the download section.

remember to remove the wire before you go driving or your ignition wont advance- this happened to a mate of mine and nearly ruined a 10k engine |

I set mine without bridging it first then realised your meant to and went to set it again with the plug bridged. It was in the same spot. Is it really nessecary? |

It's called base timing, ecu won't advance while setting. I rarely use it unless trouble shooting a problem or if the head has been off, thay are normally set & forget.. |

Does anybody know which pins to bridge on a six pin plug? |

I managed to find it in the FSM in the download section. ![]() No4 pin to ground going by that.. |

On my GTI I bridged black with vio/green. I cant see any colours being described in that picture but by the looks of it they are bridging the wire that next to the ground wire. Also, i bridged it before i started the car othersie it wouldnt lock the timing |

I just guessed, reckon I might have to guess a bit more into it |

Looks like I set my timing wrong. Just did it at warm idle in P. With a Timing light on No 4, and marks on crank pulley, I think. I just checked the bonnet info stickers. Supposed to be in Neutral with a connector shorted. So I'd better look into this. Can't see s**t on that pic, am looking for a fsm now. Where is this connector?(tis too dark outside) Mines a 93 Dizzy type if that makes a difference |

In my under bonnet stickers, it shows a diagram of which contacts to bridge. Things are easier to see in daylight It was already perfectly timed, sometimes your luck runs good. Tested properly, it read exactly 5 btdc. I then checked without the bridge, and it was reading a fluctuating 8 ish. So I musta been a bit rough on the first timing |

While you have your book out, whats it say for valve clearance? there seems to be a lot of variety for the same head and I might have mine a little loose (or killed a piston) |

Would the manual I have in the shed help you Royce? It does say Vitara but it might only cover Carb models? |

My import engine was a 95 Swift 4wd G16A, but was 16V efi. So I used Vitara/Swift G16B settings. Chose mid way at .10 for inlet and exhaust. Seems to be running ok, though not sure I could hear valve rattle any more anyway. People with good ears tell me it sounds good. |
