- 6.5 transfer gears (beefed up mounts while your at it)
- lock both diffs
- strong flat belly skid plate (definately needed in a LWB)
- cut guards to fit 33-35's

hi fellas im a newbi here put onto you good blokes by a guy on anouther forum. Anyway as the title sugests we have a lwb sierra ute of the 1987 ilk and the time has come to turn the old girl into a hardcore comp car. as of now she is completly standard, labour and mechanical skill are no obstical as there are no less than 2 mechanics a couple of real handy guys one useles dude who thinks he is real good and me a farm boy who can do most thing if only a little rough so im relying on the others to keep me neat. so we were thinking sticking in a 1.6 crawler gears 3/4 elipticals ruf just to start. so any ideas the more the better cheers fellas. i hope iv got this in the right section. |

Welcome to the site matty! First and most important thing i reckon. You say you "comp car" ....Do you mean comps, or just general wheeling? If you mean comps, you have to know what comps you're going to enter, and build the car for that. Find out what comps you're going to do and find out the rules and vehicle requirements. No point us telling you what cool mods to do if they clash with what you're trying to build. |

But i would say; -33 or 35's like said -lockers front rear -gearing -RUF the real way 
and it would be an extremely capable sierra if your keeping standard diffs maybe SPOA, depending on if your going hilux diffs or not. Should be a good build up, Good luck |

we are over in perth. the car is going to mainly do mud and rock sort of terrain. there is a comp over here called mud guts glory that will be the comp we are aiming for. she will prolly do a bit of sand work dunes and stuff but mainly mud or rocks. |

well i have a soft spot for diesels but in the name of fun factor one of the boys who is part of the team is set on a supercharger. the vit 1.6 is a torquey little motor as it is and with a charger i would expect that that torque curve would be improved heaps plus there is talk of a nos system that we can get cheap from a mates work so power and torque shouldnt be a problem. There was mention above to ditch the zook diffs and go the hilux diffs is this just a personal preference or are the sierra diffs not up to the 1.6 power? |

gday guys thought id pop up and just fill you guys in on a bit more of the specifics, by comps i mean rock, cime clay and mud and some dune work, no winch work here so far the slightly confirmed list is 1.6 efi swap with s/c, possibilty of nos RUF with aprox 2" chassis extension 3/4 elliptical rear mazda 626 leafs? still unsure on leafs atm possible rear D/shaft disconnect roctoy t/case ring 6.5 t/case gears t/case lift some barwork to protect panels p/steering welded rear/lokka front 33"s+ prob go for simex centipedes beadlockers? |

guys as we are going to run simex jt2's 34 x11.5 the front gaurds will need modding a reasonable amount and we are talking about modifiying the grill which would mean that the front lights would need moving. is it worth while refitting headlights or just bolting a set of spotties on the front bar? remember it is not going to be a road car. |

since your fitting a 1.6 and lifting the case i'd suggest a body lift. that plus plenty of guard cutting should clear the 34's. Shouldnt need to go moving the headlights though? If its already a lwb i wouldnt go out of your way stretching it too much further, meaning less cutting into the headlights. (im a fan of fullbodied) Either that or go a tube front clip... buggyish style. I dont see 34's warranting that though. or even 37's.

Thanks mate. yer dee i want to keep the panel work fairly intact well untill its so dented and damaged that its no good anymore the car was my grandfathers so i want to keep it looking like a suzuki and keep it red for the old girl. in terms of moving the headlights one of the other guy was talking about angeling the front quarter panels in i think its called boating or something, but hopefully a nice neat gaurd trim should do the trick. Ideas? thoughts? |

this was the guard trimming i was thinking about matt oh and ill give the suzi store a bell about some f100 rims once i get credit on my phone  or you can do it 08 9250 4650 - chasing the f100 rims, -24mm offset

Right so iv got a few photos of the blank canvas they are not very good as a complete technophob took em but they will have to do. the tray is stuffed so that needs replacing trying to come up with some good designs for a tray. but the body is very clean and rust free. the instument panel. thinking of striping this, keeping a tacho for when whearing full race headwear and cant hear engine and then putting in oil and water temp and oil pressure plus a wide band fuel mixture gauge and a boost gauge for the supercharger. http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv6/ ... 7Small.jpg the view from the back. the tray will be replaced by a race tray with spare tyre and roll bar with 4 lights, possibly a second radiator to aid with cooling for low speed work for the s/c, thoughts? http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv6/ ... 5Small.jpg and the little 1.3 that will soon be replace by the 1.6 fuel injected, if you look close ya can see the emu export can being used to seal a hole in that hose. http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv6/ ... 5Small.jpg i thought i had a shot of the side of the car but it mustnt have worked but i hope from these ya can see the idea What do people think of exo cages? i know they will keep the body neat but does the extra weight up high out weigh the benifits of them, is it more worthwhile puting in an internal cage to protect just pilot and co-pilot? oppinions? |

I was up in the hills near Kalamunda, but my greedy landlord kept putting my rent up til i could no longer afford it, oh well, so i moved down to Mandurah in August, i am sharing a place, splitting it 3 ways, saving heaps more now, but cant do what i want, when i want anymore, lol... Can you do all the barwork yourself, have you got benders and welders etc? If you want to do fast stuff do an internal, although it will be hard to make an internal for the ute cab
If you do rockcrawling and buggy stuff, do an external because the panels will look like crap after being smashed up every time you go out driving. You'll bend that ute cab on the first outing. Are you very big? I'd get rid of the ute cab, sell it, get a soft top cab and cut it down, so that way you have more cab space, you can move your seat back. ... and you can replace things like windscreen surround etc. If you're keeping the stock diffs, get big arse offset rims and don't worry about people who say you'll go through wheel bearings, like it's only being driven in comps or on the farm so you'll do like 10KM of driving in a day at best and then it'll sit in the shed for a month. If you do mud stuff you're more likely to stuff everything up with mud and have to pull it all apart and maintain it anyway. |

thanks steve yeah we can fab up the cage pretty easy as we have all the tools and the skill set to do it. yeah the cab is a bit tight for me at 6foot4 but its ok and the others are shorter than i am.we kinda have to keep the cab to begin with anyway. |

ok so for the time being we will run lux springs, as we can get about a dozen leaf packs for a slab so we have plenty to experiment with. will work out later what shocks (compression and extension wise) we will need, however what is the general consensus? i know commie wagon shocks are used but i measured the gabriel ones up at work and they only had 9" of travel |

wacked them on the paj, omfg death wobbles between 45-55 is insane. no longer driving the paj atm, need a good balance before i try again
