Gday guys I have a mate who is a gun of a boilermaker, and will be building me a rollcage/bar for my 92 Sierra... I am just after some opinions as to what is the best way to go about it. I currently have an alloy one bolted to the guards, but I don't trust it in a rollover very much. Would it be better to bolt large plates to the front of the wheel arches, or bend the pipe so that it can mount to the floor? Also, what is the best way of running the bars inside the cab? Somehow I don't think the windscreen will provide much support, being a soft top... Is it best to remove the windscreen clips and run pipe down the side of the dash there, or somehow else? If anyone has pics, links to sites or ideas, please lets have 'em! Thanks, Linc. |

My 6 point runs down the side of the dash, missing the hinges. I think its 32mm nominal bore tube there. Theres two ways of fitting it. Running the tube past the dash and just massaging the inside of the door slighty to fit around the tube (how mine is-hardly notice it) or you can do how I think Rhett did his and carve away or melt some of the dash to inset the tube into the dash slightly. To get it blue plated you must have at least 100mm x 100mm x 6mm footplates top and bottom and use at least 2 12mm 8.8 grade bolts per footplate. John. |

I was wondering if some rectangular box section would be useful for going next to the dash, or is smaller dia tubing going to be stronger? I considered smaller dia pipe, but felt it wouldn't be strong enough... What if like a 25mm tube was inserted into a 32mm tube prior to bending? Would that make it stronger? As for the footplates, I assume that is the same (100mm by 100mm) for the wheel wells also? Oh yeah, thanks for the input, keep it coming!!! |

Gross weight of a sierra 1100kgs. Are you going to be going at 160 kph and then roll? 32mm pipe is fine. The car will fall to pieces before the cage will break apart or bend IF it is welded properly and designed well. Remember it is a small light car. If you stick another 300 kgs of cage in it, it will handle differently. And also you will have trouble keeping to the speed limit. Fuel economy will be worse etc etc |

Good points Tzar... I have considered the extra weight, and higher COG that comes with it... I will eventually be putting in wider diffs, which should help with that. Good to know that 32mm pipe is strong enough. As for speed limits and fuel economy, I drive 6km each way along the m4 four days a week, and I can sit on 110 no probs... |

32mm seamless steam pipe is fine for the front pipe work, and 42mm for main hoop, its also cams spec !! |

For the main hoop, would it be better to mount it to the floor or the wheel arch? I would prefer the wheel arch, as it would look neater, but I feel the floor may have more strength... Opinions? |

just a couple of ideas for you, the cage i built in the red car, the one in the blue is max's zuke built by bruskibult. the cage in the red zuke i built so the rear seats could still be fitted. you mightnt have to have all the pipe work but these were race cars so it was needed. i will take some pic's of my newer zuke as i have sold the red one. |
