| Post subject: | Removing radiator welded side brackets |
Hey guys couldn't find it in a search just got a replacement radiator (thanks daisy!) and need to take the metal brackets that are welded onto my old one off to hold the new one in place... Got one side off as it was half off anyway but the other side is fully fixed ... Also can I get away with metal meld to hold them onto the replacement radiator or do I have to find a welder? Cheers |

The brackets are usually solderd on, an oxy is best but I have had varying degrees of success repairing radiators with a propane torch kit from bunnings which is used by plumbers for soldering, the trick is to have the surfaces perfectly clean and to use soldering flux.

Ok willpick one of those up today forgive me haven't gone ths before soldering flux is the material you 'glue' the two pieces together with? And you Just clean both pieces with wire brush, wipe down with metho and stick the end of the soldering wire in between and heat with torch until melts and pieces can stick together...? Also any ideas on getting the othr side off anyone? |

are there any radiator places close to you that could knock the job over quickly?? You apply the flux to the faces etc being joined.Than even heat to the areas to be joined until flux sort of luiqufies and goes clear,you dont want to get the material too hot,just a nice heat.Then apply solder and if you have nice even heat and clean surface it will run around the join in one nice motion. forgive me if im wrong,just how i go about silver soldering some hydraulic fittings at work.Also just be careful cleaning with metho sometimes,lately we have had a bit of trouble and are putting it down to the metho or a bad tub of cigweld flux |

Sweet thanks for the advice... By the time I get the soldering stuff and practising soldering for the first time probably better if i take it to a radiator place then... Damo said there was a good radiator shop in murrarie anyone know that one I'm in Hawthorne ? |

im sure any of them could do it? Itd be cool to have a go yourself and learn a new skill but i reckon youd end up spending way more than what the shop will charge and maybe never use the goodies again |

Yeah would be good to learn but I would liketo practise on something I don't need as much...but also am broke so probably best to get it done right first time cheers guys |
