I had a similar problem

Turned out to be the pipe that runs from the IAC valve to the thermo housing was full of crud.

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

yep check for vacuum leaks on every hose, mine was a small leak in a few hoses all compounding into enough to cause trouble

clean your airflow meter with some contact clean too

high idle will be caused by many things, e.g. faulty temp sensor, faulty throttle position sensor, both of these will cause a check engine light though.

There is a coolant hose going through the bottom of the intake manifold, inside there is a motor that spins and either allows water through or blocks it, i believe this is to heat the air that passes through the throttle body, if this is rusted shut then it will cause your exact symptoms.

no there is 2 seperate sections there

there s the IAC which is a valve that the ecu uses to bleed air around the throttle body to up the idle spedd when the ac is on or the lights or whatever

there there is a waxstat thingo that when cold does the same thing, the coolant heats it up and it blocks off the extra air, same thing as a sierra auto choke almost
