I have a problem u see. I have a SPOA sierra with 32's and rockhoppers. Now that sounds good but my engine doesnt! :( I new by doing all that would probably kill the engine but i thought it might take a little while. Not the way i drive. Im tinkering with the idea of a 1600 carby recon. I have started to ask questions but im all confused. Some say its the best thing since slice bread and others would never go there? I have heard that it would go through more fuel at 110kph than the 1300 and vica versa. Someone told me port n polish the inlet valves and another said dont! Another guy said work the 1300 then a mate told me to go the 1600 because it will do the same but with less effort?????? I need to come up with a sollution fast because i have no wheels and a club run that i really want to go on approaching!!!!!! Help with your suggestions. Ne previous experiences with the conversions and or cheap but good mods. I pretty much want all the info i can get so when i finaly do this im happy :D

but the extra $1000 for the engine would buy a lot of fuel

a ierra with big tyres and stuff uses 12l to 100km, a 1.6 tuned right does the same but goes faster

i put a 1600 carby engine in 2 zooks one a NT and one a WT.

easy enough to do and goes great, does use a little more fuel though, not much more but you notice it. can tow a trailer full of gear and hold 100k's easy except on steep hills, also dont have as much of an issue with angles when 4wding

and you can connect the gearbox from a sierra to by an adapter plate if you wanna pend the money, or if your tight (like me) then you can redrill some holesin the bell housing and bolt it straight on.

if you wanna have a look at my setuo let me know and you can come over if your near clontarf :D

thanks guys so far your info has helped. Im about to go over to suzi store and start the ball rolling. Im going a 1600 carby recon engine. Im still confused about getting it ported n polished? But im getting tri y headers and a stainless steel hi flow cat. I have found out that there are only 2 diff ratios for sierras 3.9 and 3.7 is this true? If i have a series 3 rockhoppers i should have the 3.9 is this true? What will the vitara engine be reving at when im doing 100 110kph in my seirra with the rockhoppers and will that be opening the 2nds? Thanks again keep adding your expereinces please.

if you have lots of money get the works

I'd just stick with what ever diffs you have at the moment. If you're a poor uni student trying to get lower gearing, you get the 1L transfer case and NT diff centers and then pretend it's soo much better

My 1.6 revs at about 3 to 3500 at 100Kms on the highway from memory (tacho doesn't work anymore)

Thanks to all who have contributed to the this thread. I have now got the 1600 recon vit motor in. We used my carby, intake manifold dizzy and airbox. Every thing else got changed. We talked to the head guy and decided against port n polishing. I wouldnt really benifit from it. Only if i were consistantly reving it past 5000. If your were to go there only polish the exhausts. This was because you would get beter fuel atomisation if the intakes were a little rough. i changed all the hoses, i got NGK leads and a new left hand engine mount. i went with a set of tri y headers and stainless steel hi flow cat. The hi flow cat has 250 per sq in were as the hi flow ceramic has 350 per sq in. we lifted the bonnet only a couple of mm to clear the slightly taller 1600. I will keep writing hear with all the updates on how it all goes. Testing it running it in and the like. as when i was researching i found it difficult to seperate the bullshit from the truth.

Thanks again for all your help.

carefull with your calculations, because i bet you'll be using heaps of fuel for a few weeks, coz you'll be flooring it everywhere

Are you happy with the power? or did you expect more?

I find it most noticable when you're 4wding and doing hill climbs, you don't have to flog it like the old 1.3

So far the conversion has been awarded 5 stars. I love it. On and off road it has proven strong. Ok so far with all my calculations. On road not thrashing it: from a tank 37ltrs i get 320 kms. Off road it doesnt really change much. I can now sit on 100kmph on the freeway. i have tended to cruzz at 90kmph. It feels better less on road noise and it useds less fuel. It can reach right up 120kmph but 110 is average. it has a lot more torque. Off road: it is something else. The extra torque comes in handy when your on that major angle going realy slow with one wheel in the air and with both lockers on. See thread "wa suzuki club goes to collie" for pics. Even on climbs that werent realy difficult in terain but were very steap and the 1.3 struggled just because of the angle the 1.6 drove straight up. She doesnt struggle on long hill climbs. Going through deep mud i now worry theres so much torque there.

So in short. The extra torque i feal is the biggest benifit from the conversion. The better cruzzing speed comes a close second. i do recomend the conversion but this is my opinion. if you do go this way get the adaptor plate. i feal that it makes it a better conversion in that they dont drill ne holes or weld dodgy tabs on the block. i will get a close up pick of the adaptor plate and the conversion in a couple of days when i find a free couple of minutes and post them up.
