Hey guys I have recently got my hands on a set of ipf800xs for my sierra. I've had a few problems getting them working properly though. I understand the sierra are ground switching, and from searching through the forums and tech articles i believe I have hooked them up correctly. The problem I am having is that I can hear the clicking noise of which i can assume is either the fuse or the relay when I turn on the switch, but the lights do not turn on. Also my front right light is dimmer than my left, I am unsure whether this is a contributing factor. Photos of my coily up tomorrow! cheers.

Sounds like you should check your fuses. Sierras have a fuse for each light. Also double check your wiring and follow the wiring diagram in the how to section. I printed it off and took it out in the garage to ensure I done it right

x2 to what eldo said ... you blew the fuse for the rh headlight.

cheers guys checked the fuses and turns out it was blown, now I am just trying to get my spotlights to work, I can hear it clicking over when I flick over the switch but no light, does the clicking noise mean everything is connected properly and there is possibly a problem with the lights?

If you can hear and/or feel the relay clicking, its usually a good sign, so there could be something wrong with teh spotties. Have you connected the spotties directly to battery to see if globes work? Are the globes infact filament globes or did previous owner fit HID's and not give you ballast?

have you made sure the earth for each light has been done properly?
i.e. bare metal under the terminal and screwed down tight?

the clicking sound means the relay is working. so the problem is either in the headlights themselves or the wiring leading to them.

you need to check the bulbs and all connections. be sure to open the lights as sometimes the connections inside the plastic cover can corrode and come loose

this wiring diagram is simpler to understand...

cheers guys,

the spotties themselves are brand new and when i was mucking around with them a few weeks ago when i originally put them in they were working, so as you guys said i am going to wire them direct to the battery and see if that works, and if it does ill check the wiring.

If the relay is clicking, it sounds like it is switching OK.

Check that you have a battery supply to the relay, and have it coming out too. Do you have a multimeter or a test light? If not, grab a cheapie from Supercrap and you will work it out in no time flat.

ha yeahi think i may have to if i don't solve it soon.

So, I checked the lights hooked up directly to the battery, no problems, there.

I got my hands on a multimetre from my neighbors, what/how should i check things exactly, I have no idea how to use one of these things?

If the relay is clicking you are halfway there. Check you have power at pin 30 all the time. Check you have power at pin 87 when you switch high beam on. If you have power at both of these pins then check your earths for the lights.

You need the voltage DC setting on the multimeter, otherwise just a simple test light will do

k guys thanks for the help, after checking and rewiring most of the loom my mate who helped me install it in the first place told me something interesting.

Apparently because we used the ipf wiring loom we had to alter it a bit.

SO essentially this is how it is hooked up at the moment,

Fromt the relay, there is a thin black wire, which was originally meant to go to ground according to the ipf wiring diagram, now joins with the wire going to drive at the back of the headlight connector .

from the switch there is a yellow wire which connects into the wire a the back of the connector that says ground.

All the other wiring is hooked up per the diagrams on the forums.

Now when I conenct the ground wire running from the spotlights the bare metal, it is very tempremental. as in when i screw it in it will not ground correctly and th elights will only work when i push it against the bare metal. There are also a large amount of sparks when i try to connect the twi and when i hold this ground wire to the body for long enough, with the lights on, the connection between the two starts to heat up to the point where i cant touch it.

what pin of the relay is the thin black wire from?

make sure the earth wire is at least 3mm

the switch circuit should be spliced in as follows:
wire spliced from right side of headlight plug to negative side of switch,
positive side of switch to pin 86 on relay,
pin 85 of relay spliced into left side of headlight plug.
(without the switch the lights would always come on when high beam comes on)

Great Success!

Thanks for all the help lads, cleaned up around the point for the ground wire, and they are working perfectly, unfortunately had to give the car a push start because of all the juice I had been using for the lights with the car off..

hey guys i need some help with some IPF lights on my hilux, i got them as replacements for my hellas after and accident, i only had comet 1000,s or something but they were really good, these so called upgraded ipf lights are shit house, i thought they must of had low wattage bulbs, took em out today to put 100W H3 in and they are 130W ipf globes, i thought these were the ducks nuts??? they are really terrible and the only thing i can think of is maybe i need to upgrade the loom, i reckon the old spotties which were awsome were only 100W jobbies???? any ideas? i might also check for voltage drop at the lights

go for a drive on a road with lots of posts with reflectors and see how fr up the road they light up

a lot of the time when people first get good lights they think they are crap cause they are a more natural light

royce got them in january 09, so im well and truly sure they are shit house. my old spotlights used to light up the road for double the length and clearer, they were round and these ipf's are square

theres the problem then, square lights only work on Euro cars

i dont like square spotties, my sierra has little rectangle hellas and they are ok for what they are
