Post subject:  Best way to remove factory side decals
What's the best way to remove the factory side decals without damaging the paint underneath? I was thinking of just using a hair dryer and slowly peeling it off. (I don't have access to a heat gun) Any tips/tricks?

Any factory decals, there will be a difference in paint surface underneath.

Sierra's are generally faded now.

My 88 lwb has no decals, but you can still see where they were. Stupid squiggly lightening stripes..

I used heat gun and a citrus based solvent. Hair dryer will do the trick too.

Ti tree oil is great for removing residue as well.

Prepsol, or go to super cheap or repco they will have it if not just ank a panel shop for a little bit might cost ya a 6 pak

Get a caramel wheel from your local auto paint supplier.
It is an eraser like rubber disc that you fit to a drill.

Tea tree oil, as mentioned or Eucalyptus oil will get rid of the sticky residue

I was a painter back in the days, and we used heat gun and the rubber wheel that hooks on to the drill

when using both of them its easy to damage the paint work, so if you go rubber wheel, dont press to hard on the paint just enough to get the sticker off yeah, cause you can take the paint off aswell

Same gos for the heat gun, dont hold it to close cos the paint will strat to bubbleand thats no good, most heat guns are rated at about 600-700 degres so thats pretty bloody hot, I think the one at the shop was 900

but yeah thats what i think, Good luck with it :wink:

My mate used a pressure washer and then just use te tree oil etc to get sticky resedue off

Not to be too picky, but it is tea tree oil. Normally derived from Melaleuca Alternafolia trees.

Either spelling will get the sticky shit off your car without damaging your paint

Caramel wheel will only make a mess if you don't use it properly which I can't see how anyone could do..
It will remove the decal/sticker but will not burn/melt paint unless you are REALLY heavy handed with it...
Prepsol will take off and sticky residue left.
That's how all the professionals do it as it's quick and easy and doesn't do damage or leave oily residue that may fry new paint.

leave it in the sun & peel them off once warm.

burn them off with fire, probably not the best idea tho.

this is what we use. probably the easiest and safest too. regarding the paint difference afterwards, take it to a good detailer (one recommended for paint resto/cut and compound) and have them machine cut the paint back and wax or glaze it afterwards. will come up shinier than the day it rolled of the production line.

Probably cause it's full of silicone. We use SoEasy tyre shine at work to clean up all the shit off the forklifts paint. It comes up a treat, but our painter hates us :lol:

im having trouble getting my decals off too, tried the heat gun and its painfully slow. my stickers are really old, in fact about 24 years i reckon. the stickers are baked on. i was going to give the caramel wheel a go and see what its like, otherwise i will hit it with a big sanding disc. im trying to get away from painting the whole car. has anyone had experience getting off the oldest crustiest stickers ever?

yes, this is what we do :wink:
we use wurth wheels, just be careful,thats all. slow rotation high torque compounding machines workbest, but a slowish rotation drill will do. have the car buffed after and youd never even notice it ws there :wink:

i was gonna try wurth wheels considering i work for them, probably get a good discount i reckon
