| Post subject: | Question about mechanics |
Ok, i fried my clutch and need to book it in but not sure where to take it. Do mechanics just use generic cheap parts? Or can you request specific parts? Since this clutch and cable is going to cost around $800, i was wondering if it was worth replacing the gearbox while he was at it? Its done 220000kms and am just waiting for that to blow next. Also, how much do gear boxes cost? Is it reasonable to think i can get a clutch, cable, flywheel and gearbox fitted for $1300? Thanks |

I should think you could get out of it for that pretty easy, i wouldnt change the gear box unless its noisy etc Just a tip use the same thread for questions relating to the same thing some people dont like several threads for the one thing. It also helps other people looking for info when they search beacuse its in one thread. |

Ok, no problem. Thanks I have been looking for heavy duty clutches for vitaras and people say exedy suck for vitara. Whats a good brand. I will buy the parts, attempt to install them and if i cant, i will get a mechanic to do it. Cheers |

You have asked a question but have no background...... What do you drive??? What happend??? What is the gearbox like??? How mechanicly inclined are you??? What kind of driving do you do??? Why do you want a heavy duty clutch??? Do you have any other mods, gears, diffs blahh blahh blahh??? Are you sure the clutch is gone??? |

Yeah sorry, my fault for starting so many threads. Most of those questions are covered in my other threads. '97 Vitara, got bogged fried the clutch, not sure, not very, mostly road and beach - using it as a fishing car, want it because clutches seem to fry easily in 4wds, just bought it - seems stock, it still works but am too scared to take it to the beach again incase the gears cease up again.. |

Mate slap a standard clutch back in it unless you are looking to do some mods or looking to do a lot of off roading or towing. Secondly I am saying this without knowing anything about your or your expierance. Driving on sand takes a while to get the hang of, Make sure your not over using your brakes. Be sure to let the air out of your tires (on sand I run 8 too 10psi all around) get a good recovery kit for sand (a few planks of woodare priceless) if that is what you are going to be on most of the time. In sand as soon as you loose traction stop reving it all your doing is digging a deeper hole its not like mud where you can find hard ground, once your dug in stop. Jack your car up fill the holes and away you go. |

Ok I have gone and read your other threads.... Mate dont read books, You need to get out there and drive it more. You need to learn how to drive on sand. Go out and fallow someone that knows how to drive on sand. some run in high range some use low range either way you need to just put some time into sand driving. Get your self a high lift jack (a exauhst bag is good for noobs on sand and get yourself a few long planks of wood or one of those sand ladder things. There is no need to burn up a clutch in the sand. |

Thanks mate. For all i know, the clutch was already burnt out when i bought it and the bog just showed it to me. Its an old car with lots of ks so i was expecting something like this. No dramas really on the beach other than the clutch thing and the only reason i got bogged was because this other guy was broken down on the exit of the beach and i had to go around him on some really deep, soft sand. Will get back out there once i put a new clutch in Cheers |

well, mate on the first question about what mechanics will use, well at the workshop I work at as a base we'd use an OEM quality clutch but would be more then happy to install a more expensive better quality part if requested. On the gearbox note, on the vits they are pretty easy to replace as it is, (bell housing is held to the back of engine with 4 bolts and the starter) I'm just an early stage 2nd year apprentice and just converted mine to a manual (pedal box is a bit of a bitch though) |

Hey shep without a winch how usefull is a snatch strap when you travel alone???? Read back he goes fishing on his own on the sand. This is why I said the exauhst jack would be his best bet. If he traveled in groups I am sure he wouldnt even be asking these questions and I am sure he wouldn't of burnt out his clutch. |

have a look at where i travel. if you have a snatch strap you can stop a car if one goes by. with a shovel and a bucket and a bit of water you can unbog any sand bogged car without useing a dodgy jack that will just bury itself into the sand anyway. oh and notice that i specified a shovel and not a spade where on a standerd vitara can you use a hilift jack? trust me mate i have been bogged a lot and in some very remote spots as well, nothing beats a shovel. |

X 2 this man knows his shit a shovel is about as handy piece of equipment as you can get. one shovel full of dirt is the difference between diffed out and driving away no stress on your drive train. |

yeap, get a snatch strap and shackles, and the shovel for the sand. Too many people go 4wding without a strap. I have come across many people that are stuck, and my first question is, "have you got a snatch strap?" ...and all the dumb fucks say No. So if you have a strap you can help other people aswell and not be the dumb fuck that can't help because you don't have a strap either. Although you probably couldn't use a HiLift jack on a Vitara, i use my HiLift jack all the time on my sierra, and never had a problem. I recovered yelf twice on the weekend with it. HiLift jacks don't kill people, people kill people. |

With regards to helping others. This guy was bogged and stopped me as i passed. He took one look at my car and laughed and said dont worry about it, i'll wait for a decent 4 wheeler to come. Could my vitara even tow some guy out of a bog? |

No worries, will get a snatch strap. Are there stock recovery points on the vitara for straps? Or do i need to install them? |

| Post subject: | Re: Question about mechanics |
your Vit would be as capable s any other 4wd of recovering another vehicle, but depends of the weight of the vehicle and how stuck/bogged it is. If the dude was in a Patrol and was really stuck then your Vitara may not pull it out and he'd want something bigger with more weight to pull him out. If he was really stuck in sand and put in a bit of effort himself to clear the sand from underneath, your Vitara may pull it out ok. PS. stuff like vehicle weight, power, clearence, grip are some main factors |

i would buy an exhaust jack/bag thingo before lugging a big heavy death jack around! there is no where on a stockish vitara that would come close to accepting a hi lift jack. especially if traveling alone in the sand! |

so vitaras dont have towbars or bullbars? Good to know. I am guessing they dont have seals either... If you know how to use a highjack correctly they are far more usefull then any shovel. I don't know about you but I can move some dirt with my hands. I on the otherhand dont know many people that can lift a vehicals with there hands? I keep all the above with me. 3 Strap with D-shackles, shovel, highjack, bigfoot base for highjack, jumper cables, axe, a few small spares, airpump, water, some food, torch and a full toolkit |

He said stockish vitaras. A highlift jack doesn't shovel as much sand as a shovel so it's not as usefull as a shovel. If you want to shovel sand use a shovel. A highlift jack would probably move more dirt than your hands. What have seals got to do with anything? PS. hahahahahaha |

Are there stock recovery points on the vitara for straps? Or do i need to install them? utube Don't use any of the standard tie down points on your Vitara for any snatch recoveries. They're ok for a little pull if your loosing traction but that's it. So yes get after market recovery points put on your car . That guy probably did you a favor when he said he'd wait for a real FWD. Did you notice what he was doing to get him self out , or was he just waiting for some one to pull him out with out first trying to clear his diffs etc with a long handle shovel. Did he have his tyres let down. Sounds like the best thing you can do is go out with a few others with experince and have a play in the sand , getting your self stuck then see what it takes to get out . Sometimes just letting a little more air out is all you need so never panic or get worried . So hopefully you have a reasonable tyre gauge and even a compressor won't be a bad thing to get. I've never had to let my tyres in my LWB Vitara more than 16psi, to get out of sand so have play with your pressures as well. I know a few people with over 400,000 kms on their Vitara's so just because yours have done 200,000 kms doesn't mean its a shit box . Just service it and replace things when they need it , no need to go over the top buying the best of everything. |

especially if traveling alone in the sand! im a tight arse.. i run with the stock jack, and blocks of wood. it worked fine jacking a pootrol up, and up and up... so we could clear its diffs and pack crap under the wheels etc. Beats lugging a highlift around. |

| Post subject: | Re: Question about mechanics |
I keep a high lift and a snatch strap with me. Ive winched myself out before and other people. But as other people have said the high lift wont be of any use without having someting to jack off. So an exhaust jack, snatch strap and a shovel would be your best bet along with a compressor to air up afterwards |
