My house mate is looking at getting a 85 sierra on the cheap because the transfer is stuck in neutral.
I was just wondering if any of you have experienced this or have any tips of what to look for when fixing it.

pull the stick up when trying to shift as the bush maybe worn or missing. roll the car back and forwards, start the motor and slowly release the clutch and try to pull the stick backwards....

i first read the question as "im buying a new sierra as this one is stuck in neutral"

yea we've tried pulling and pushing the stick and rocking the car. Will give it another go on the weekend.

If what 31zook said dosent work remove the stick and now the selector back with a screw driver and while it's out buy a new bush you can still get em from Suzuki

I have rebuilt about 5 transfers now the 2 that had this problem were both simple fixes. If what 31ZOOK and jimbo said dosnt work you will have to take the box out and pull it apart. There are 3 little ball bearings that have springs between them that keeps the shifter/rod in sink. I dont know how to explain it but if you take it apart you will find what I am talking about. The first one that wouldnt shift the ball bearing was cracked in half the second one, one of the springs had broken locking it. But try everything before you take it apart

i had an 84 tin top and mine would get stuck in neutral. un screw the boot, around the transfere case lever. push the metal part ariund the stick down and twist. it comes out kinda like a light bulb. then the stick comes out. move the selector rods with a screwdriver so they line up, and put the stick back in.

it'll possibly get you moving again, but it will probably get stuck again, so either dont move the stick til its all fixed, or carry around what u need 2 fix it. once you have done it, and seen what needs to be done, its really quick 2 pull it apart, move the selector rods and put it back together. good luck _

Im just fixing up a sierra (g13b conversion) and yesterday when I'd got the engine going I tried to drive it but the transfer was stuck in neutral. I thought the transfer case was broken but did a quick read on the forums and they said the bush was a common problem.

I pulled the gear lever out and the bush had totally disintergrated! I bought a new one (18bucks) and it feels like brand new now!

Where abouts in adelaide are you?

thanks so much for the info you got me out of the shit today, i rang my missus from the top of a hill i just cllimbed up & got out to have a look at what i had got up, got back in and BAM t/case stuck in neutral, she looked up this thread while i was on the phone & she read out what you guys have written on the subject so a huge THANK YOU

My transfer got stuck in neutral when 4wding on a camping trip once. Just seemed to pop out and then found even rocking it back and forth, and pushing the car around for a bit, still didn't fix it.

While not relishing the idea of towing the vehicle the 1.5 hours drive home I set out taking the top of the transfer case parts off from inside the car.

Turned out the stick had just popped up out of the selector and into the neutral position and couldn't get back into the selector. Taking the top parts off (Don't know the names of them - plastic boot held on with a metal pin in a round shape, there was a spring loaded thing that that needed to be turned 90 degree's anti clock wise I think, while pushed down which released it, and bam there are the selectors) down to the selectors, was able to slide the selector into a position I could put the gear stick into it, test to see if it was driving, then put all the parts back on.

It was quite simple once I'd done it, needed a few screw drivers, and sockets.
