Post subject:  car won't idle

hey im way sorry if this subject has been covered a billion times, but my sierra was running sweet and really reliable but now now it starts and runs for 5 seconds and then dies. i went mud driving not long ago so i degreased the carby so now it runs for a while then dies, i sprayed a heap of carby cleaner down the throttle body. I went to start it and it happened pretty much straight away and now it won't stop... could it be electrical? it's a standard G13A. it was showing no symptoms before it's a all of the sudden thing...

it's a little worrying as i need it for work....

give it a good rev with the air cleaner duct off the carby and choke it with your hand a couple of times always seems to work for me

sounds like a jet blockage issue josh, try some compressed air or start to pull the carbie off it mate.
probably something is floating around and blocking the jet, try running it with the choke on, if it runs then you would guess that the jet is blocked...
hope i made sense

Or 2 to 3, only problem with that is you leave the shit in the carb, zookster's method suck's it out of the carb & the eng turn's it into ozone killer.

Mine does the same thing but only on the first start up after it has sat long enough to cool all the way down.
I will try all these suggested quick fix thank you as I was going ot ask the same thing if it haddent stopped.

The hand choke thing I am guessing that creates more vacume on the fuel/ventura sucking through the small blockages???? This could make the problem much worst couldn't it?? if it blocks the jet completely???

do you know if it's overfuelling or underfuelling?? As already mentioned it could be just a blockage and I'd use either the back firing method or the rag over the top of the carby to try and get the crap out of it. If it's overfuelling you may find the the needle and seat in the carby is sticky. Give it a light tap around the needle and seat area with a hammer to see if it comes good. Otherwise it sounds like carby rebuild time

I used a great product from ThreeBond called Engine Conditioner. It's a foam you spray down the throat to clean it out. It cured my random stalling problem. I'll be using it on the Prado when I get a chance...
