The whole center's should just bolt in....

the old vitara diff (front) has 22 spline side gears and iv already tried swaping 26 spline ones from my gv into it but they are just a touch to big thats why i was looking at just the ring and pinion, or better just the ring gear

Need both, can't just do 1.

thay will swap across but the pinion will have to be shimmed & the backlash will need to be set to(need special tool's to do this), tombutt from here has just made a Cv using the 22 spline inner housing & the shaft off the car it's going into, you would have to change the passenger stub axle to.

i really dont like the idea of making up custom cv every time,
i understand about the need to ajust the back lash and i have a mecanic mate who can do that for me but whats involved with shimming the pinion? and iv noticed the size difference in the ring gears between teh vit and gv would this matter if i swap them over or will ajusting the backlash fix that?

how many CV's have you broken so far?

Post subject:  Re: ring and pinion from vitara into grand vitara

no cvs yet mate
i just when and had a look in my pile of bits from the old car witch the diffs came from and i found a stub shaft and the surviving shaft and cup from the drivers side

im thinking now maby do the flange stub axel mod
Image
that way i can easyly remove cvs, only need to carry one spare. only problem would be getting it through rego

so maby mixing cv would be just as easyer,
with the shaft from the gv cv join to the inside setup (inside the cup on the drivers side) of a 22 spline cv?

I want that shaft!! :P :P

your part write, the part with the spline shoud be the only bit off a vit you use, I call that the cup, the race is the bit the ball's click into & the inner race is the bit that slide's onto the drive shaft. I'll try to find some pic's.

Found one!!

The red arrow point's to the "cup", spline is part of it.

Green is the inner race, the race in this pic fell to bit's! :P

I just want to copy it!!!!

I'll send it back :P

It look's like what I am going to do, involves cutting up Cv's to do it on the cheap tho.

unfortunaly there steknig its not mine it was made by SIKID_01 from D4x4 for his old vitara, pm me if you want some more details

thanks for the advice so far steknig, atari and tombutt you have all convinced me to run the 22 spline front in my gv and make a cusom shaft only thing i need now is a 22 spline cup. the one i have instead of having a cage and inner cage has teh slots for the 3 wheels set up.

dose anyone have a spare 22 spline cup laying around that fits teh cage and inner cage?

If you do get hold of it, I can laser cut the plates and do the mod, as I have done this conversion with Toy CV's for an old ex-member of the NBS club GEAR. It worked great!!

I can't remember, but I do know the hand brake cable point's to the front.
I just got under my car & the difference must be in the offset of the hemisphere.

I do have a rear center here some where, I have another look for it.

i thought about measuring the rear diff as well but i hit a speed bump trying to break the gasket seal on the carrier. iv tried putting a bit f pressure on it from bellow to break the seal but no luck. any tips?

Post subject:  Re: NEW Q: vitara diff into grand vit, how to get rear axels

I would like a pic or 2 if that's possible.

The wheel bearing's can some time's need a lot of loving with a hammer (some think I do to) to seat them.
Did you swap the ring & pinion's or just put the center in?
Do the bearing's & axle's look like thay are lining up??

Post subject:  Re: NEW Q: vitara diff into grand vit, how to get rear axels

unfortunatly im away from the car so no picture
iv put the whole centers from teh vitara in. and yes the bearing, axel and backing plate (the 4 bolt plate infront of teh bearing) look like they are lined up with the rear diff housing

Did the bearing start to go in??
ANY shit or foreign object's around the bearing will stop it going in, may help to give it a Lil lube to ( was going to inset smart ass comment but couldn't be bothered typing it) as by design thay are a tight fit.

I know people that have done this conversion with no hassles but miss alignment can't be ruled out, so shine a torch down the axle tube & see if the side gear's seem to be centered.

Post subject:  Re: NEW Q: vitara diff into grand vit, how to get rear axels

thanks steknig you have being a big help so far
the axel meshes with the side gear because i can hear it turning the other side gear the bearing is stll about 10mm out from its seat. and the bearing seat is clean. when i get a chance after work il check with a torch see if everything is all right and no blockages. if im still haveing problems il try get some photo up

when i get my car on the road i think il do a build up thread and cover all this for others,
