hey my carby will idle fine when you start it in the moring as it's cold but when its warms up it revs then sit's at 2K then you rev it again and it dies... Im wondering if the choke has something to do with it...

I have put a can of carby cleaner down it, pulled it apart and cleaned everything out (there was junk in the bowl, for the record) and put it on and it's fine till the motor warms...

check to see if the throttle shaft bush is floged out and if any of the moving bits
are sticking at all.

Mine was acting a lot like your when i first got it. I had a carby guy look at it, ended up being the return spring for the choke had lost its power, replaced it with a $2 new spring and it never did it again.

cheers dave, hmm it sounds like the normal idle fuel feed is getting starved but im sure i have cleaned it all out.. ill blow my lines back now....

when you said you cleaned out the bowl how did you do that? you could of blocked some thing or knocked the float out of whack. that would be the 1st things i look at.

I grabbed a clean rag from my bag-o-rags and a tin of carby cleaner then rubbed it out and sprayed it...

I went for a drive, it drove fine and rev'd like a dream, but when i drove up a long hill sucking the fuel through i got to the top and it died on me, but when i cruise along a flat bit of road at 90-100kph it idles at about 600rpm afterwards. but then after a while picks up again. Where abouts is the idle fuel mixture section? Also i pulled the hose off the fuel pump and blew air into the carby with the throttle closed would this be more effective with the throttle open slightly?

are you vacuum lines on right? almost sounds like your egr is opening the idle up or leaking in air where it shouldnt

or your choke isnt working but the idle is set high covering an airleak

hmm i checked the vacume lines as well as i can and when i pull all the lines off it seems to run the same as when there on...

I realised yesterday that when you drive it it's fine, but when you work down through the gears coming to a stop, it seems to suck the fuel out of the bowl and starve. But if you knock it out of gear it just idles along like a champ EVERYTIME.

what part of the carby would be doing this?

ill pull it out (again) and just check everything.... i almost decided to drive it into a tree yesterday... looks heaps awesome driving you girlfriend around and at every stop it dies, then makes that horrid grinding noise when you try to start it....

OK so im writing in to thank everyone for there help. thank you. now that's over with i can tell you what it was. Im pretty sure it was a blocked idle jet. I didn't even have to pull it out to fix it. There is a method i found whilst searching where you take the carby lid off, place your hand over it then rev it and suffocate it. This (for a reason unknown to me) cleans out the jets, on get black junk on your hand but it's a small price to pay for a truck that now works

I picked up another carby in the process and a webber im going to rebuild and try to run for a mate.....

When you rev it then suffocate it, the sudden vacuum sucks a large amonnt of fuel through the jets, pushing out whatever was in the way... Good to see it was an easy one to fix!

lol. Never heard it being called that before. Some of the best mechanics I've ever met have been Italian or Maltese. I've always known that procedure as the rev tune.

Now that it's running right you should replace the fuel filter near the tank AND fit a small filter between the pump and the carby to stop this happening again.
