I have a 1.6 8valve carby motor and 1.3 head In my Sierra and when I first put it in it was backfiring alot and carrying on. I swapped the 1.3 carb for a 1.6 one and done the timing which fixed the backfiring etc

All of a sudden it has become smoky at high rpm and using oil. it seams to be fumy and a bit sluggish but it has similar characteristics to what my original 1.3 had
any ideas what it could be?

fumey as in overfueling, or as in white smoke/ oil?

The fumes have something to do with the oil consumption but it doesn't smell like the usual oil burning smell it's an odd fume not fuel but not oil if that makes any sense

I was told something about Sierra fuel pumps crapping themselves and pumping fuel into the oil what's the chance if this being the problem

i bet its too rich and washing the oil off and burning it

It's using a crap load if oil was almost on the low mark on thedipstick after the run to glass house mountains on Sunday.

When an engine is built the cylinders are bored and HONED.
The honing process leaves (approx) 60 degree cross hatching in the bores.
These fine scratches are put there to trap a small(tiny in fact) amount of oil to lubricate the piston rings as they slide up and down the bore.

If the fuel/air mixture is too rich then the excess petrol will wash the oil out of the hone scratches resulting in excessive wear to both piston rings and cylinder bores. It also ruins the engine oil which makes all other engine components wear out faster.

Is there some way I can test how rich it is running?

Could it also be valve stem seals? I started it up for the first time since Sunday an it coughed and farted and blew a heap of smoke then cleared up which is exactly what my 1.3 was doing.

I'm convinced they both have the same problem

That is a symptom of valve stem seal's, if you let it idle for around 2 min's then give it a rev (not a valve bounce) it will blow smoke to, if the stem seal's are gone.

Yeah well I have I have a head here with new valve stem seals that could be my problem!
