i read that gear sets from the front centres of vitaras will fit into the sierra centres, if i was to go 5.1's or the 4.6's and a 1 litre transfer case how would this affect the car on and offroad compared too 6.5 transfer gears and the standard 3.9 diffs, i am only an apprentice and im thinkin the diffs gears will be a heck of a lot cheaper than goin 6.5 and having to strengthing the mounts etc. i am only running 30's at the moment but plan to go to a 31" or possibly 32" in the near future.

6.1s do cost a bit but they are much better then the altenative and much easier to install. The diffs you can do later down the track. 6.5s are the best base for gearing you can work around. You can make stronger mounts for around $20 with a HT bolt, some washers, Nut and some poly. A few different guys on this site sell some good quality mounts.

But if your short on cash the 1L box is a quick easy upgrade to help you out for the time being. It doesn't give a hole lot but more then the standard. The vitara ring and pin are good but not always cheap or easy to come by. I would do the 6.5s then down the road do the diffs.

i cant imagine it needing 6.5s and diffs?? would be pretty low
all options bar the 1Litre case are a bit low with the 30" tyres but with 31s or 32s maybe not low enough in the bush except for the 6.5s,depends on what driving you do?i had 5:12s in my last sierra on 31s and from memory it was even lower geared than my 6.5s in High range? Was ok for the bush but no where near ideal. If you can mate,my opinion would be aim for the tcase gears.

32's + 4.6 R&P + 1L transfer = stock gearing Thats my setup.

i do a little bit of crawling but my main problem is wen doin climbs i have to use first gear low range which is too much revs and wheel spin which makes the car hard to control and second low doesnt have enough pull and will stall, plus my onroad gearing is all stuffed use alot of 3rd and fourth on hills hardly ever use fith. cheers fatzook thats what i was hoping to hear il prob stil go for 5.1's if i go that way cos i would like to have lower gearing than stock as i dont think standard is really low enough.

And the same setup with 4.16 gears gives Stock Hi-Range (And therefore correct Speedo calibration for Mr Hwy Patrol), and 64% lower Lo-Range.

you can just bolt the 5.1's in from a vitara but they are still mounted in the alloy pinion carrier's & they're not known for the massive strength.
they really should be swapped into your carrier's & if you need to pay some one to do the ratio swap that's going to be more expensive than installing a set of transfer gears.

Not necessarilly true.
It cost me $220 per diff to get the 4.6's in with all new bearings, seals and crush tube.
You just have to shop around
