A mate in Adelaide is trying to remove a gti crank pulley for me but is not having much luck... he has removed the center bolt ok, but the 5 or so small ones around it won't budge... he has soaked them in wd, and using a rattle gun. Has also tried a breaker bar with cheater bar. any ideas to get it off? (need it for my alt upgrade  )

Too late now but the big centre bolt only holds the cambelt sprocket and not the fan belt pulley. Fan pulley is only retained by the 4 or 5 bolts (depending on model). Sounds like you've tried all the usual tricks.. They'll probably break before coming out if they are that tight. I'd snap them all off and replace the bottom cambelt sprocket and bolts. M6X1 X20 I think. |

Yeah, drilling them out is the only option left... the motor its coming off is farked, so doesn't matter if they snap em off. Well at least I know when i remove mine not to take off the middle one, thanks

try hitting it with a bit of heat that may losen things up a bit. |

Go out and buy some freeze spray, Loctite make a good one, they come in a pressure pack with a straw. Freeze the bolt heads and try to remove em. I have never used it, but another mechanic mate swears by the stuff. |

I'm unfamiliar with the GTi engine but is there room to use a breaker bar and then use the starter to crack the bolts? |

The motor isn't in a car. just told me they have stripped most of them.. so guess its going to be the breaking path.. lol.. Thanks |

also another tip, if you can't get the crank center bolt off, put a 17mm nut on the end of a breaker bar and and start the car. come right off

You don't need the remove the cambelt pulley bolt to get the front fan belt pulley off... AND The engine in question isn't in a car. If the bolt heads are rounded, I'd centre punch and drill the heads off. |
