As the paint on my sierra is badly cracking and worn all over the vehicle with surface rust starting in those areas I was thinking of repainting it myself at home with acrylic. A cheap way out of paying someone to do it. and im not after something 100% perfect, just to get me out of trouble for the time being.

Never done it before, but Im sure I'm more than capable after a test run on the rear door

Should I go ahead and do it?

I was thinking I would do the Bonnet, Doors, and Roll bar all in stages and then do the body last. So it wouldn't be out of commission for too long at any one stage if I need it urgently (as its my daily driver)

It looks like the previous owners have just sprayed over the original paint and that is part of the reason for the cracking and flaking. So would be a bit of work to sand it in some areas.

Has any one got any tips for this? or any useful links?

go buy a cheap orbital sander from bunnings and start sanding all the big flat areas with that, will not take too long

being a dd its going to be hard to do.
if you can stand to paint cracks id just patch up the rust and be happy.
it is a sierra and it is a 4wd so paint condition should not really get under your skin too much

Rub the whole thing back with an orbital sander, thinners on a rag to get all the oily crap off your panels..In a nice windless area that is free from dust etc(garage with the floor hosed down is good)Get yourself a good primer/putty, mix at a ratio of about 1:4 I think roughly(could be wrong) One nice thick coat should do it, or you could go 2 not so thick ones if you wish. Apply a guide coat of flat black. This should only take a day. Wet rub back with I think about 600-800 grit(it could be different, again its been a while) You want to rub the black off without taking the primer putty off. Be gentle, take your time, you are after a nice smooth finish. Mix your colour as previous and give it 2 or 3 coats, a rub in between with some really fine wet and dry is good, not sure on grit type. Again, another day if your taking your time. Clear coat...mix same ratio again and maybe add a tiny bit of colour. Wet rub back with extremely fine wet and dry...Buff and enjoy..

It has been a really long time since I have painted a car, there is most definately a few things I might have over looked, ratios, sand paper grades etc, someone will definately correct me hopefully. I'm sure there will be several suggestions to do or not do do stuff, so just figure it out for yourself I guess

I would suggest getting it to all primer in a day, then all colour a different day, this way you have a better chance of a more uniform neater finish.

On a zook i'd be inclined to do it wet on wet, As in sand it all back with 180/240 on a orby, then 2 THIN coats of primer surfacer, let that dry for 30 minutes, colour then clear, all done in a day and looking a lot better!

On my last one i sanded it back with 320 all over, then hit it with 3 coats of "export" spray can blue! Cheap and easy!

I painted mine with a brush and White Knight Rustpaint. It has gone a tiny bit chalky though, maybe not chalky but certainly not shiny. Was hoping for a better alternative.

if ya use hammertone paint you will only be able to repaint with hammertone.

whiteknight is a retail paint and ameron is a industrial brand.

I do want to stay semi-pro and it look half decent, so won't be going down the pressure pack path.

Orbital sander sounds much better than the ol hand sander! lol

As I said it is a daily driver, but doing it over christmas I don't have as much work going on and can afford to have it apart to an extent. Can always borrow a car from the family if I really need to.

started pulling the car apart today, and hit the bonnet with a orbital sander...

damn door hinge screws are stuck in good.... got one out then on the next one I screwed up the extractor.. will get another tomorrow..
