There should be a spring on the bracket behind the idler pulley but it's not really necessary as it isn't a belt tensioner.
The idler is fixed once the bolt is tightened up.

The spring is kind of like a shipping bracket... One of the techs in my shop told me it was only there to keep the tention on the belt as the engine was being built till the tenssioner was tightend. Not sure if that is true.

Yep I have also heard similar that its only purpose is to tension the belt while the pulley bolt is done up.

That spring has broken on mine previously and caused the timing belt to slip....... !*($#%

Personally, I plan to leave it off for any Suzuki motors in the future...

I used to have a spring on mine so I used it to set the tension when I changed the belt and then took it off because Id heard stoies of it falling into the timing belt.

Hows it all coming along anyway?

just happened to me.

some good info. was just about to get a new spring but i didnt understand how it was needed seeing as the pully was done up tight, not allowing the spring to do anything.

I remove the spring prior to installing the pulley on mine.
The bolt will hold tension correctly, the spring just adds another potential point of failure.

yep jump on redlinegti.com, their is many a sad story of valves being lunched in the g13b motor cause of the spring ejecting itself. Best option is to just piss it off. I don't run it on two of my GTi motors, no dramas so far.
