the 1.6 will give better torque but as for expense you don't need a adapter plate for the gear box but also the mk 1 will need the right angle adapter for the dizzy which is $400 both have pros and cons I have done the gti conversion twice now once in my mates zook with a mk1 and once in my zook with a mk 2 the mk 2 needs the Mazda dizzy cap as the right angle drive wont fit if I was to do it again I would use the vit 1.6 the only reason I went with the gti was a complete car came up for $200 and all I was after was the inj for the side angles when rock crawling after selling of all the bits from the gti that wasn't needed the conversion ended up costing me nothing

If you get a good 1.6 with a good head you wont have a problem. the gti is easy to get in because you dont need the addaptor plate or different mounts.
GTI motors are getting cheap if you know where to get them. But they are still only 1.3L Go for the 1.6efi. Both converts have been done a million times so it all comes down to what you want.
The gti is a very revy motor and isnt the best off road. but it si still better then the carby. Just off the top of my head the 1.6 depending one what one you go for will cost around 600 too 1500 more to install but over all you will have a much better set up if done right.

but dave with the sierra fly wheel and used with crawler gears the revness of the gti is not that bad of road and is useful on road

Personally if it was me I'd go 1.6.

For off roading torque is king. The 1.6 has buckets of torque down low where you want it.

Sure the GTi can work with the gearing and all the rest of it, but at the end of the day, the GTI doesn't really beat the 1.6 on any level, except perhaps on cost...

The 1.6 may be harder to fit, but once its in it will be the perfect motor for the car.

I do agree with Ben the 1.6 is a far better motor but as I stated before I did the GTI as it ended up costing me nothing in the end

This man, he knows.
Try driving a sierra with both engines. The gti is a dinosaur in comparison.
