A 5 speed box would be good, lots of guys have done this with no dramas and it worked well droping hiway rpms but 5 speed gearboxes for 1 litre engines are hard to find. You should be able to find a good 4 speed as lots of people have conveted to 1300 5speed so they are around. This will be your cheapest option, what year is your car as there are two different 4 speeds in the 1 litres, a small gearbox which is similar in size to an LJ gearbox and a large gearbox which is similar in size to a 5 speed sierra box, they bolt in differently.

cause yours is the later model maruti, not the sierra 1ltr the tailshaft yoke should be the same as a 5spd box meaning you should be able to swap the guts out of a sierra 5spd straight int your 4spd housing as they are the same except for the bolt pattern on the bellhousing. This was the case with 2 of my previous rigs but they were both 96 maruti lwb.

yep. im the lucky bugger that brought it. it's not just a straight forward bolt up but I don't think it will be too much work.

hey 2stroker the 2 different 4 speeds that you talk of... are they just mounted differently at the gearbox cross member or is the bell housing mounting different too?
