Good tune up and service then run high octane fuel.
Skinny tyres at high pressures are good for less resistance = more speed.

i drove a 1L for a few weeks and it pulled 110 easy.
my mate has another and it does 100 fine too.
what mods have you done? unless the engine is rooted it should be able to do 100 no worries.

Yep my 1L could quite happily sit on 120, even with all my tools in it !
Your engine must be being strangled somewhere, or is on its last legs...
Have you tried using some Octane Booster ?
If thats to expensive, throw in half or even a full bottle of Metholated Spirits, when you fill up, it works for me, and cleans out all the fuel lines and carby !

that would cost more than a 1.3 conversion if your going to go to the truble of fitting a 1.3 you might as well fit a 1.6 even if it is a carby 8 valve motor

I am sure I read a post somewhere on here, that you couldnt put the 1.6 in a car that started life as a 1Litre...
anyway, it sounds like my car should be doing what I would like it to with the engine it already has, so if i can just get to the bottom of why it isn't, I will be a happy chap.

hey mate. check that your throttle body is opening full when your foot is flat to the floor.
my mate sierra had a similar problem.. couldnt get up to 100. found that when his foot was flat to the floor the throttle was only a little over 3/4 open.
other things i would reccomend is run premium fuel. advance timing a little. clean throttle body with carby clean. gap spark plugs correctly.

Can you afford higher octane fuel over there? only joking, but on a serious note and its all over the news today the corrugations on k.i would make a sierra/stockman get a new noise everyweek
And yes i know what the roads are like
Tyres originally wouldve been these - F78-15-4LT?

Would this be remedied by thinner/ original spec tyres? (anyone know what they should be on my car?).
i would fix the noise mate and then worry about if ou can get 100kmh and over.
did the mechanics that did the sevice check over the front end. ie all the steering componets, kingpin bearing etc. mine use to shake like a bitch when i was on the highway.. found my kingpin bearings were rooted and it was sitting on the knobs of my muddies.

Chop Believe it or not it costs $18,000 to bring over one single petrol tanker to the island - when the ferry has a tanker on board it can only take up to 20 other passengers due to safety regulations, 20 potentially fried passengers has been deemed to be the tolerable limit. so yes the price of the crap low octane fuel, would make most members on here, wince. and yes the corrugations on my road are now beyond a joke - only today I was wondering if in the event something broke on the car due to the roads, if the council would be liable to pay for it. just found the tyre size in the owners manual:F78-15-4PR or 205/70 R15. I have P215/75R15's which I think are LT's. Are they sufficiently different to cause speed and roadholding problems, does anyone know?
I was one of those potentials last thursday arvo on the ferry back at 5:30pm snuck on as stanby and was the last passenger, but they said its 25 passengers only.

Reckon he did, cos I asked him to check the car front to back very carefully for any possible probs and he is (IMO) the best and most trustworthy mechanic I have found here, but thanks for the tip, I am going to quiz him again on the car.

An online tyre size calculator says that the maximum difference between the standard manufacturers recommended size and new tyre size, should be no more than
+or- 2.5%, mine are increased by over 5%, so I reckon this may be causing some of the probs on the road.

Slightly oversized tyres like that won't have any really significant effect on performance... And it certainly won't be causing all the noise that you keep referring too...
If your gearbox is shagged like you suggest, then either a replacement or an overhaul should be high on the list... Then sif it still performs badly start looking elsewhere....

Gadzooks, sounds like you bought yours recently, like I bought our Stockman traytop, same engine etc. I had all the same issues, and fitted bigger tyres which are what was on yours when you bought it. The tyres made no difference at all, other than reduce the screaming at 80km a little. My gearbox/transfer also rattles, something that worries us, but that will one day get fixed, because I dont want it breaking out in our sandhills. As far as speed, I wouldnt drive ours at over 80, it bounces all over the place, and we have just replaced the springs and shockers, serviced the wheel bearings, cv joints etc. In another forum, (we have a Patrol and use ExplorOz), ther write up on Zooks was super positive, BUT did mention their tendancy to wander and that it probably wasnt much worse than when new. There are lots of Zooks down here, most of the tintops/ragtops seem to handle and go a LOT faster than the traytops for some reason I dont know why. I have asked plenty of locals and mechanics, and it is just accepted that 80km/hr is a comfortable speed. I would like to try it on a smooth freeway tho', has to be better than our country roads. BUT, I have to say, makes me feel better that I am not the only slow Zook on this site!!

no wonder so many 1ltr's blow up with you lot driving them.
if you put a tacho on the car i think you will find about 5000rpm is about as much as you want to rev them to when changing gears and at 90km/phr in 4th the 1ltr will be reving at about 4800rpm.
if you plan on keeping it alive for an extended period i suggest limiting top speed to about 90. The 1ltr isnt as robust as the 1.3 and doesnt rev as freely, but some people will tell you i had one she sat on 120 all day and revved to 8 grand doing donuts in the dry - they are lying, most of these ppl have never had a tacho on a 1ltr or had to live with driving one for an extended period of time.

bad noises. bad vibrations.
could be something as simple as a stuffed universal joint.
my 1 litre can sit on 100 easy enough on flat road, it loses momentum pretty quickly at the first sign of an ant hill though. but I am running 30" tyres (equivelant to approx 235/75)
I set the timing on mine using a timing light to specifications and it was gutless and didn't run well at all. set it by feel and it is great! I know the 1 litres running right because it revs all the way to 6000rpm and beyond. If it wont rev out I know somethings wrong with it. THATS HOW YOU TUNE A 1 LITRE. sometimes by the book aint always best.

could the rattling be the engine "pinging" (pre igniting) the fuel causing the horrible noises you describe?
what is the timing like?

I agree with a lot of the guys so far, a 1 litre should have no problem holding 100kph on the flat. One of the guys named Glen that used to be on the forum had a 1 litre that could not do 80kph, he thought the gearbox was stuffed because it sounded so noisy and vibrated, I sold him a box but it didn't fix the problem. When he started looking further, it ended up that it was not the gearbox but a nearly seized transferbox causing the trouble. The engine was labouring to drive the transfer box before it could drive the car, once that was fixed he had his road speed back. As for your tyres 215 are a good size, definately not a big tyre by comparison to what most are running, set up properly you should be able to run your sierra flatout on on those corrigated roads.
As for MrRocky's comments I don't see any more 1 litres blowing up than I do 1300's, remember that the Japanese kept 1 litres in their cars and sold the 1300 hand grenades to us westeners. Surprisingly for a alloy OHC crossflow engine a 1300 suzuki engine makes less horsepower and torque than a dirty old push rod 1200 datsun engine from the 70's.

So because you cant do it its BS, i had one of the very first NT HT SWB 1L Sierra's in WA, it had the standard M+S Tyres, i had a Roo Bar fitted, and i had all my Refrigeration tools in the back, and it would happily sit on 120kph without even pushing it, and NO it was not screaming its box off, from memory it would sit on 4500rpm, 5500 being redline and it was still doing that easily 3 years later, when i traded it in on a 1.3L JLX WT Sierra...
So please do not call me a lier !

Didnt say it couldnt do it, i only tried to put forward that it was my opinion that if longevity was required then i wouldnt recomend doing it too often.
Have to call you out on this one 120km/hr doing 4500rpm i would have too see it to believe it. More like 5200rpm on the 3 1ltr utes i have owned.

Yep you can call me out all you like, i dont know if your LWB has lower ratio gearing or not, my 1L SWB was stock, and it would sit on 120kph without any struggle, and the engine was not screaming its head off !!!
One trip i took to Paynes Find, in the mid 80's, to do some prospecting, i had all my camping gear, tools, a fridge, and a passenger, my 1L was stuck behind a road train, i floored it to get passed, i hit 130kph, and the engine was still not screaming or near the rev limit, i know what my 1L SWB could and did do !
IMHO, the 1L had more grunt than the 1.3L !

I think perhaps it's the difference between the 1L swb and 1L lwb.
Could be that those who say a 1L can comfortably do 100kph are talking about the swb?

What tyre pressure are you running ? On dirt with no load I would only run about 15lb. As for the 1lt engine from my experience they are a tough motor and can handle the high rpm ok.
Sounds like something wrong with the drive train not likely the box.
Did the mechanic drive it and experience the noise ??
Goo luck with sorting it

I keep the tyres at around 32psi.
Dont think the mechanic drove it at speed so I dont think he experienced the rattling.
I have booked to take him for a 'high' speed drive tomorrow morning.
