Post subject:  Oil filter brands. Any preference?
Does anyone have a preference for oil filter brands?

I've always used Ryco but just noticed the filter for my GV (Z418) is made in China whereas other ryco filters are not. Whether or not that makes a difference is anyone's guess.

hey mate i use ryco filters on my cars as well.

(the sierra an the honda jazz)
there usually isnt that much prce difference between ryco and a cheapie. plus ryco have a reputation they want to uphold.

but in saying so i have had oil filters that have leaked, not from the rubber o'ring but from the metal housing, that icludes cheapis, ryco and genuine oil filters.. it rarely happens though

I stopped using Ryco when one leaked in my Forester XT. I use Cooper or OEM.

i use baldwin filters manly as i like to annoy the fella in katherine that sells them.

get a clean piece of paper and bang a ryco filter onto it and be amazed at the
bits of metal that come out. :wink:

I use purolator, mainly cause I bought a massive box of them ages ago for $1.80 a filter, when they run out back to ryco, never had a failure, never seen a failure, never heard of a failure

Interesting reading about the ryco's.... might have to look at getting cooper or purolator again.

Shep is there anything special about the baldwin filters? or do you just like to annoy the fella in Katherine. 8O

Use ryco Cooper valvalione
the price diffrence is alot I get the cheapies for about $3 at work you get what you pay for but in saying that never had a problem from a cheapie

Lack of filtration killed the engines and was told by the engineers that inspected the damage that the filters block easily and then bypass.

Wasn't in a car, the were both gensets.

Both engines were serviced as per the schedule using the right oil just aftermarket filters. They both died within a week of each other and were 11 months old.

The aftermarket filters were only a couple of bucks dearer than the recommended ones.

I would argue the point there that for 2 engines to die the same way so close together there was another aspect to it, what specifically broke in the engine?

I would say for a filter to block easilly that it would be filtering better than the others and there is something wrong with the engine if there is that much shit floating in the oil, it is afterall a closed system

I would also think industrial machinery thats specced to have a bypass filter in it without any kind of bypass warning (not many bypass filters these days) means something is amiss, shit even dirty old minis fitted with bypass systems had a light on the dash

I dont know how touchy the newer suzuki engines are first hand but on the new (last 5 years) Volkswagens, engines get destroyed by non genuine filters. main reason being the factory filters may not be the best filters but they are the filters that Volkswagen have spent millions of dollars developing that engine to use and any other will not be exactly the same. The new 1.4 twin charged (supercharged/turboed) oil filter has a valve built into it. The non factory ones do not. On the 2.0FSI engines the after market filters clog up causing early big eng bearing wear. The 2.0TDI aftermarket filters cause the cam shafts to chew out the bearings.
Honestly new engines are not like they were 10 years ago.
IMO on anything under 100ks use factory filters (there is a reason they spent money to develop that engine with that filter) after that its up to you.
On my bashers I use whatever filter I have laying around as long as it fits.
Right now I have a Passat V6 oil filter on my sierra simply because it hold an extra 700mls of oil.
All said and done I am not a fan of non factory filters I have seen to many of then fail or cause major damage.

From memory all the bearings died. I wasn't involved with the removal from site and inspection, just remembering what I was told when I did the training.

The company I worked for supplied the engines for a remote community and the warranty claim came back through us. All I did was pack them up and put them on a truck to Sydney.

I don't think the were supposed to have a bypass filter in them. I think that was the problem.

This is going back 15 years or so now and my memory is a bit sketchy on stuff I wasn't really interested in.

I do know that the warranty claim was denied and it was because of the filters fitted.

x 2 with the seam.. thats where i g=have had them leak before. i never had any problems with ryco and turbo charged cars.. the problems that i have with OEM filters is they leak out of the seam.


the main thing we have seen is newer cars, is not using the correct oil which is causing all kinds of problems. in particular new diesel engines.

Ryco had a really bad batch about a year back (just before they changed to the latest style they are using on their packaging) we had absolutely heaps come back even as little as a week after a service with leaking filters leaking from where the casing meets the base, we got so jack of it, at work the boss has changed filters. cos ryco was being pretty cagey about it though they did replace the leaking filters, but being a small business that i work you cant get a reputation for using dodgey filters etc.
