Post subject:  New WHeels/Tyres for better offroading

Hi All,

So it's time for me to start modding my 2005 Grand Vitara.

I've traditionally owned sports cars so this is my first 4x4, therefore I don't know too much about modding.

I'm looking at increasing my ride height. I've got a fair idea on what springs etc I want, but I also want some better tyres/rims to help me out and perhaps give a bit more ride height.

I mainly drive on road, but I'm going to start getting into more 4x4ing over the next 6 months or so. Not harsh conditions, but I want to be able to get through the beach plus the occasional off road mud patch without gettig bogged!!

Any tips would be awesome :-)

Thanks in advance,

Chris

sounds like you need some good all terains,

I'd reconmend the Mickey Thompson ATZ as a good alrounder that have a decent mileage garuantee, others on here will have different opinions and preference for tyres but it mainly comes down to what you want them for and what you want to spend

muddies are pointless if your not planning to tackle much mud,

some please correct me if I'm wrong but I think most AT's would be 70-80% road sand and 20-30% mud depending on the tyre, which sounds like what you'd need.

as for sizing I have no idea on the GV but theres guys on here who have them and would know what needs to be done to fit what

Let the fun begin...Look here, as far as modded GV's go there is some pretty good ideas there.

Tyres....IMO Mickey thompson's are a bit over-rated. Maybe try BF Goodrich AT's, or if budget is a concern maybe a Maxxis.

yes BF goodrich AT are a good tyre- mud tyres are junk on anything other than mud.

I disagree there, my MT/R's do great in the sand... you can feel them paddling there way along. They are a true ALL Terrain tyre, good on the road, rocks, sand & mud!

Why do the Motorcross bikes run sand paddles instead of smooth AT type tyres?

The biggest tyre you can fit without major mods is a 225/75/16 - you will get some slight rubbing in the front but a 2inch lift will pretty much fix that. As for rims....as far as i know you can't fit a 15" rim as it'll hit the calipers up front, most people end up sticking to standard rims.

I have the 2inch ironman lift in my 01 GV (and BGF A/T 225/75/16 rubber), and pretty happy with it - any higher than that you'll start to find problems with the camber of the front wheels - do a few searches and you'll find heaps of info

16" I beg to differ...I'm pretty sure GV rims are 17" well at least my 2005 model was
