Clamp off single brake line above the diff as well.

Get your axles out via the link i posted.^^

Make sure oil is out. But undo top filler plug 1st, just incase you cant undo it later, So you cant refill it! 80w or 90w gear oil

Then, its as easy as undoing all the bolts around the centre. Pry it off, or get a jack under the driveshaft flange and jack it up, this will release the hard silicone crap.

Assembly is reverse of removal.

You need new silicone for sealing the new diff centre.

Bleed your brakes on the passenger side.

All you need is basic tools. 10mm spanner/socket. multi wheel brace or stock one, then unsure what size for 4 axle/drum nutsetc
14mm? and shifter for the driveshaft.

Use stands. Wheel chocks/ or put in 4wd with hubs locked.

I think thats about it. Sounds easy eh? :lol:

I was just thinking today that i should do a full writeup for each diff, dissembly and assembly. I need to do my lwb one's soon!

can any one tell me how much work is involved in changing a rear diff centre on a wide track sierra diif? or point me in the direction of some step by step guide to doing this? any help would be awesome cheers guys.

1. Take diff to nearest workshop. 2. Hand over cash. 3. Pick up new diff. Easy really ;)

Bluesuzy has nailed it with his post. It's about a 2-3 hour job for a complete beginner. Getting the axles back in can be a bit tricky (Gotta push down on them to lever the splines up into the diff carrier). And getting the bearings to reseat can take some firm persuasion. Make sure you use some decent sealant on the diff centre and bleed your brakes after reassembly. It's a fairly straight forward task to become more familar with the workings of your car.

what tim said.... very simple just take your time and the rear drum brakes don't have to be pulled off...

That little writeup was uber quick, i had to go to work Mine i just undo axle nuts, pop drum outer off, bolt on reverse, pull/slide hammer axle out. No disconnecting of brakes! ner ner..(custom bearing retainer plates) Part of Assembly, Get the bearing located in the hole with the spline located already in the centre, Get a piece of round bar or similar prob 200mm long, then put in the centre of the axle, then hit the bar with the hammer. Much easier then hitting fingers/studs etc to get the axle back in.

Just about any automotive grade sealant will work for this application. I use Permatex Ultra Grey for diffs. $5-15 at supercheap for a tube big enough to do a couple of diffs, depending on brand you use.
