I have a problem with my sierra.

The other day I was cleaning the carby out with some clearner spray, I was reving the engine to get the cleaner running through like it said to on the can.

I took it up to about 7rpm for a few seconds and I got this pop sound and then the engine died. Now when I turn the ignition it makes a clunk noise and nothing happen, much like a flat battery. I doesnt turn over or anything just makes a wierd noise then nothing.

I thought it may be a spark plug lead at first because they have a habbit of popping of the distributer at high revs but they are all still attached :S


Anyone have any ideas what this could be or give me some clues were to look?

how many k's on the engine? might be a head gasket but i have seen a few broken pistons in the 1.3 so that is my bet

130,000km with this engine.

I have also found a fuse that hasnt blown but its plastic casing and the plastic around it is all warped and melted.. That doesnt seem good lol

No idea what the fuse is for but its the 3rd from the left on the top in a 86 sierra. Anyone know what this is for?

pull the plugs out, see if any are missing bits

Sorry its actually the 2nd fuse from the left on the top.

Royce which plugs are you talking about??

I would never push my engine to 7000 rpm's, 6000 rpm maybe...
And putting carby cleaner through it, which makes the engine run rough, and doing 7000 rpm's is a recipe for Disaster !!!

I would say you have blown the engine :roll: :? :(

Alright,

So on further attempts to start the car, I tried turning the key quickly in succsession and instead of the single clunk I got a quick series of clicks but the engine will still not start.

I dont think its an engine sound, I probably shouldnt have described the sound as a clunk, its more of a click.

So how do I check the plugs? Never done it before..

pull the leads off the plugs and undo the plugs with a spark plug socket. that easy 8)

Im using a SP socket but they wont budge. How hard to you have to push them? Im worried ill break the clay shit lol.

Im pretty sure the problem isnt in the engine though, the clicking noise isnt coming from the engine..

I reckon you have busted something internally - 7000rpm fuelled by carbie cleaner is a recipe for disaster.

Mate if you don't know how to get spark plugs out, then you need to take it to a mechanic, or someone who knows their stuff - Us explaining what to do will waste everyone's time.

PS the "clay" is actually ceramic, and isn't affected by how tight the plugs are to remove. Make sure you are turning them anti-clockwise.

Alright its not the spark plugs.. They all look fine and how would a busted spark plug stop it from turning over? I mean I have started it with leads out before lol.

Im almost certain its got something to do with an electrical problem. Its making the same sound as when you have a flat battery, only I know the battery isnt flat because the lights are comming on..

If I knew what the melted fuse was for that might be a clue. Can anyone tell me what the 2nd fuse from the left on the top row is?

Don't worry about the fuse. Get a spanner or socket on the front pulley and check to see if the engine will turn over by hand. My bet is something let go inside and the engine is siezed. The starter won't turn it over now, making it sound like the battery is flat.

Front of the motor, down the bottom. Has the fan belt running off it. Bit hard to get to but there is a bolt head in the middle that you can put a spanner or socket on and turn the motor over. Other wise put it in 5th gear and give it a push while someone watches to see if it turns over.

Ok so I turned the front pulley (both directions, I didnt know which way). It required a light amount of force to move but it can do full revolutions without getting stuck..

I spun it several times in one direction and several times in the other but each time I still had the same problem trying to start it. I repeated again it and still wouldnt start.

What else should I try?

And if you keep trying to start it, you will burn the starter out as well as stuffing your engine so its now siezed... i think if you try and turn over the engine by using a spanner on the crank shaft, you will stuff the engine/block/head beyond repair, and that will mean a new engine... you may be able to fix it if you just pull it apart now... i am guessing a piston head has let go, snapped off, and the piston rod is jammed under the head... :roll: :?

Yeah... but your not gonna know that until the engine is opened up..., so its better to errr on the side of caution, and not manually crank over the engine until you know what damage has been done... :wink: :lol:

More a comment for curiosity sake, I thought you were only supposed to roll an engine over (via the crank pulley) in the same direction the engine would normally rotate ie turn it over as to follow normal firing sequence, not by turning it in reverse? Every manual I have ever read says not to turn it over in the wrong direction.

Mmmmmm 7k unloaded held for a few seconds nice! Well thats the meaning of revin' the crap outta her.

So you can turn it over from the crank pulley either direction easily but the starter does nothing? Take the starter out and see what the go is there then. Bench test that.

(Assuming that you can turn the engine over a few revolutions without dramas from the crank pulley Ps try turning it over 4 consecutive rotations the correct way at the crank pulley, this will ensure that all cycles of each cylinder will be accomplished. If this isn't doable then you have serious problems )
