I've had an ongoing problem with my timing chain rattling after doing consecutive 15000km oil change intervals using Castrol Sport 5W30 fully synthetic oil.

I've just run an engine flush (Wynns) and changed the filter plus added Lucas Oil Stabiliser and Castrol Magnatec 10w40. It rattles less now but still rattles on startup in the mornings. It starts fine at the end of the day after sitting for 7 or so hrs at work.

Is there something else I can do to get rid of the rattle?

I've searched and the only other thing I can come find is to flush and change the oil/filter every 2000km or so.

I get the impression most zook motors that use a timing chain suffer from this problem. My J20A has always done it but only for a split second on a cold start until the tensioners prime with oil. I've put in a whole new timing chain kit (includes chains, tensioners, pulley gears etc) and it made no difference. I found the viscosity of the oil makes a big difference. At one stage the engine had a 5W oil in it and it rattled a great deal more than the 10W oil normally used.

Having said that, Atari has reported never having an issue with timing chain rattle with his J20A, and he too uses Magnatec 10W40 from memory.

If the chain rattles all the time (indicating the chain has stretched and is hitting the housing), you need a new timing chain kit installed. If it only rattles momentarily, it isnt a problem and more one of those anoying things. I've been where you are, tried to fix what I could, but I've had to learn to live with it.

Stekky I'm sure will confirm, his GV rattles on start up to (although his is a H25A). He too has suggested it is a normal traight and if anyone would know, he should.

100% correct, mine gets serviced at 5000kms & every time I run a Nulon engine flush through it.

I picked it up with 70,000kms & it now has around 134,000kms...

Atari - Do you use Lucas/Moreys Oil Stabiliser with your 10W40 as well?

nah i just run straight 10/40 magnatec
