As per the title, chasing a steel front diff housing and third member from a Grand Vitara. Have recent fitted a rear locker and am itching to do the front, but I'm not going to bother until I have a steel housing.
Would prefer one of the earlier 99 era'ish ones off a manual V6 if possible, however they dont exactly grow on trees so would still be interested in later models and/or XL7s.
cheers,
Moses

Still chasing this if anyone has one or knows where I can get one (I've checked with a shitload of wreckers without any luck so far)
Also chasing 5.12 gears front and rear now as well.
cheers,
Kris

Mate you won't get a air locker into a GV diff.
You will need a Vitara diff.

Nah not going an air locker, have a lockright ready to go in it with the machined carrier from Trail Tough. The steel housings/third members are the same as the alloy ones aren't they so it should just be a matter of swapping the insides over and bolting it in?
Already checked with probably the 10 biggest east coast wreckers Atari - haven't had any luck at all. Even a few suzuki specialist ones. Seems everyone else has the same idea and they get snatched up pretty quick. Need more grand vitara drivers to go crash their cars already!
What are ya chasing for the 5.12 gears joseph? Definitely interested if they are in good condition. Atari - you could probably answer this, but do all 5.12 gear sets fit or do I need particular years (I think I remember reading something about a 10 bolt vs 12 bolt rear possibly???).
cheers guys,
Kris

you will want an early GV V6 manual carrier, the later ones have a different pinion mount
the one on the top of this photo is the one you want... (broken alloy)

Sounds like a fair price to me. I live way north of you (up in Butler) but it just so happens I've got a bucks in Mandurah next weekend so could grab it then if you could pull it out before then.
Will drop ya a PM.
Thats 1/3 of my wanted list sorted. Anyone else got front 5.12s or the steel diff now?

The steel carriers and housings are definately getting hard to find.
Other option is grab a few alloy housings as spares in the meantime!?
I've got an ally one you can have for the bargain price of $0! Chuck in the locker......wheel the piss outta it. If it goes bang..... no big deal. At least you can use the locker until you track a steel one down. 5.125s should be pretty easy to find. Most of the 1.6 manuals had 'em.
And as Atari said, the issue is making sure you get the 26 spline front end.

Thanks all.
Regarding the 26 spline front, doesn't that refer to spline count on the CV joints/side gears etc and not the R&P? Hence it wouldn't matter if the 5.12 fronts came from a 26 spline diff or not? Is that right, or is my diff knowledge the suck?
Or is the issue that the 5.12 R&P gears are designed different on the earlier lesser splined diffs, hence while they have nothing to do with the spline count itself it still needs to come from said diff to ensure it fits?

i'm not sure what the auto locker replaces in the front of a vitara, but with the air locker there are 2 versions. a 22 & 26 spline, this refers to the splines in the side gears where the RHS CV slots in & the left side axle shaft.
seeing you will have to put R&P out of the alloy carrier & install it into the steel carrier it shouldn't be a problem seeing you are only using the R&P, as long as the lockrite is a 26 spline.
dose that make sense as i think i confused myself...

haha thanks Atari, that was my thoughts also so if we are both on the same track we must be right.
The lockright include a new 3 pin carrier and 26 spline side gears (had to specify that when I ordered it). Should just be a matter of bolting it in to the diff centre from my alloy diff, fitting the new 5.12 gears and bolting the whole shebang into the new steel carrier.
This is the link to the custom 3 pin carrier with lockright if anyone is interested. Linda from trail tough is awesome to deal with, really really good service. Gave it to my for that price without having to exchange my stock one also.

the whole R&P with the locker will need to be re~installed into the steel carrier & set up as you will have to reset the pinion height, meshing pattern, preload blah blah blah if you get what i mean...
it will be more work than the rear as you didn't have to remove the pinion gear from the housing, it's maybe a job for a diff dude or a good mechanic... but don't listen to me i drive a keyboard all day.
