Try the RSPCA or pound. Staffys are one of the most popular breeds in Australia now, so there will be heaps pups and adult dogs that need a good home. |

If you have a kid I would seriously recommend buying a staffy pup from a breeder. More expensive I know, but you have more peace of mind that it hasn't had a troubled past and it can grow up with your kid safely. Breeders also tend to put a lot more care into which dogs that they breed from to try to remove any aggressive tendencies. You can meet the parents as well and see how the puppies interact to choose a temprement that will suit your family. Here is a list of breeders in VIC: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/pup ... &Submit=Go Cheers Pete |

Money well spent. Please don't encourage back yard breeders salih, the less work the rspca has to do the better. Staffy's are definately not 'the nanny dog' |

Agree that breeders are the way to go and offer a better dog, disagree with the not a nanny dog. I 'personally' think that most dogs are a reflection of how they have been raised. My staffy is 9 years old, she has NEVER attacked a small child, big child(myself included) or adult. My family and I have owned staffies as far back as I can remember. Agree, she does dislike other dogs....a lot!! Plays well with our cat though, who would have thought

Staffy's come from being catch dogs. They are good as 'nanny' dogs because they are very loyal and also stable in high stress situations and are pretty tough so deal well with kids climbing all over them. For the same reasons they are dangerous - The loyalty will mean they see dogs aproaching as a threat. - High stability/drive means if the do attack they are hard to stop, and same with their strength. |

Dogs are a result of the owner and its training. Im sick of dickhead owners who dont go to obedience training and say i will do it myself. Or it cost to much! Its simple Put the time into your kids and you get a great result. Put the time into your dog and great result. Ive seen nuts Labs and even a physco Corgie, yes corgie, due to dickheads who own them. On the other hand a Rottie who was a big sook and just loved people and company and was useless as a guard dog because he wouldnt bark or growl. Sahli, get a cross breed pound dog mate, there is enough wealthy breeders who just put more dogs in the system and dont care enough about the full life of the dog or the strain it outs on the system. |

We've got a 9 month old English x American staffy although he appears to be more American as he isnt as stocky and has a slimmer head then an English one typically has. He loves playing with my 11 month old nephew, and I think the feeling is mutual, aside from licking him every few minutes he is extremely tolerant and caring with him. He is also very protective of all of us and is a great watch dog and as has been said he prefers the company of people to other dogs. |

Yer they have a ball together. One other thing I have always taught my kids to do is to randomly pick up the food bowl whilst our dogs are eating and not give it back till they sit and wait. Dont know if it does any good but our theory is the dogs learn that the kids are allowed to steal their food whenever and they must wait patiently till they return it. |
