Post subject:  sj80 crankshaft, pulley and bolt

Hey all.

After hearing a noise from my sj80 (g13ba) engine I found that the crankshaft pulley bolt was loose. After further inspection I found that someone has stripped the thread out and fitted a helicoil in its place which is also now stripped out. So now I am in need of a crankshaft, crankshaft bolt and a crankshaft pulley. I am happy to buy either just the parts or a semi stripped engine.

I am located in Brisbane and can pick up or pay for postage

Hi Wade.

You will have to pull your crank out to swap in another one, and you'd be mad to do that without putting new main bearings etc in at the same time.

Why not pull your crank out, number the bearings as you remove them, so they can be put back in later ( if they are servicable) , and take the crank to an engine rebuilder, and have them weld up the hole, re-drill and tap to suit standard crank bolt. They can also fix keyway damage if it has any. It will probably cost you less, will be quicker, and you won't be slapping another worn out part back in.

Hey mate, thanks for your reply.

I have already pulled the engine out. My plan was to get another crank and replace the main and big end bearings and put it back together. I think I would rather another crank then have mine repaired as I don't want the threads pulled out again.

I have a coily G13BA here. Do you want the whole thing or just the crank?

It had a bottom end knock so I can't verify it's condition until inspected but I'd say it is grindable. Front pulley and keyway are fine.

I see your point here. But it would still be advisable to get the second hand crank inspected before using, as it too may require work, so you could atleast pull your crank and have it inspected first. Repairs are usually as good as new.

And the reason that your bolt has stripped is most likely because the tool before you fucked it, then cheaped out on the repair (helicoil). An engine builder will ensure crank is within tolerance, and REPAIR the hole properly.

whoever has drilled the hole out for the heli coil has drilled it on a piss angle so the bolt wasn't even touching all the way around.

hmmm you have a good point aswell. You are located near me, is there a engine place that you would recommend?

PLR Engineering @ Brendale are excellent. Or Northside cyclinder heads @ Geebung. Have dealt with both and are excellent to deal with 8)

Pete I am so old that I used to go to Peter Fry when he built engines under his house at Everton Park before he opened PLR
