A word of advice. When you buy an old car it is expected alot of parts will need replacing or renewing. The good thing about renewing or replacing these parts is that once it's done it will last as long as the original. (supposably)

So if you buy another turd, you will most probably be in the same hole as you are now.

^^ what they said - get your current junk all reconditioned/replaced and you'll have piece of mind, and warranty depending on who does the work and supplies the parts.

depending on whats really wrong with it, $2k would go a long way to fixing it anyway.

x2
i'm afraid you might have to triple your budget at least
might be better off putting your cash into the car you have now
2g will be a good start.
plus as you rebuild you get reliability and knowledge.
