Don't worry, you cant f**k the motor by stuffing a timing belt as they are non-interference. A good motor to swap in is the 1.6L out of a Vitara, all you need is a $200 adapter kit and it bolts straight in, 8V carby you are done, 16V EFI will require electrical wiring work if you are keen, has more power though. Yes diesel has been covered heaps of times and general consensus is it's a bad idea, do a search if you don't believe me.

Yes, its been bashed to death. Unfortunately there are no readily available small diesel engines worth fitting (in Australia). The US guys have a few options however, with the VW golf diesels, and turbo diesels being quite abundant. There are kits available out of the states for this conversion, but you would need to source the motor from there also, and I suspect once combined with shipping etc, the cost would be prohibitive.

There are also gearing problems associated with swapping out a high revving petrol motor for a low revving oiler.

Do as the sheep shagger said, and look into the G16B vitara conversion.

pretty sure there are also issues with the VW diesel due to being RHD & the turbo/exhaust fowling with the steering... i'd be searching before going down that route.

Yesssssssssss.... Just line up marks on crank/cam pulleys with the marks on the block, rotor in distributor should point to No.4
