does anyone know if the box from a 86 sierra will go onto a 89 model?

If they are both behind 1.3L engines they will interchange.

You maybe have a difference in the pulgs on the top of the box though, I think earlier ones had one less.

yep, i just arrived back home after finding that out. oh well, at least the 2 hour return trip out to the country was nice.
