learn me on HID driving lights
what have ya got and are ya happy with them.

i have them in my zook, 6000k hi and low. thay r great so much clearer and u can see alot ferther, i can get them for 130 a set.

Great as headlights but wether or not they are suitable for use in driving lights is largely dependant on where you drive. HID's have a latency from the time of ignition to when they reach full brightness (anywhere from 2-6 seconds roughly, cheap ones can be longer). So for areas where there is regular traffic coming the opposite way they can be a pain, on long hauls and offroad they are great provided you are not switching on and off all the time.
As a rule if they are still warm they will ignite pretty well straight away though. H4 conversions dont have this issue as there is only 1 globe and instead of having dual light sources (filaments etc) the globe actually slides back and forward magnetically to adjust the focal point, as it never actually gets turned on and off all time it does not have the issue.
HID's more than most products = you get what you pay for.

I purchased a set of Power Vision 220's. 1 x Pencil Beam, and 1 x Wide Beam. Supposedly will do over 1km. I don't know yet how well they will perform, but I figure they gotta be way better than standard Halogens. They seem well built and a quality product.

One question I do have is what are people's opinions of which side to put each - Pencil and Wide, or doesn't it really matter?

Yeh it matters....Pencil goes on the drivers side to light the centre of the road, spread beam goes on passenger side to light on coming roos jumping out in front of you..

Doesn't matter which side you put which light on as the beams will cross over anyway.
Adrian, mate, roos can and will jump from either side of the road.

It sounds good in theory though...that's just how I have mine mounted, an old trucky suggested it, sounded good at the time. Your right though Jas, it makes stuff all difference

the last 5 or 6 roo's that i have hit all hit behind the rear passengers door and i couldn't see them coming.

i have tried the blueish lights and they suck big time as there is no reflection from animals eye's and donkeys are about the same colour as the road.

what i want is a light that is the same as Halogen but as bright as a bladdy bright thing however
i dont want to have a HID low beam.
has anyone tried 4h.com's converted rally 4000's

Just another thought. If HID's get damaged, can you buy spares? Such as a bulb, glass lens, electronics etc.

What's peoples experience with obtaining spares for their chosen product?

reputable brands are ok for spare ballasts and globes,cheap chinese stuff varies massively ftom one brand to the next, i know of guys who have purchased kits from china etc and ordered spares and have had 3 goes to get the right ballast.

I have used them on my pushie for a couple of years. Crisp white/blueish light. Down side is the delay before full brightness.
Won't be long before LED lights take over though.
Talking to a guy the other night reckons he close to releasing a 2000+ lumen 5w 10mm LED. Thats equivelant to a 35-50w HID!!!!!

At work we always mount pencil beam on the drivers side and spread beam on passenger side.

HIDs are great we have them in our lwb hi lo beams and they take about 4-6 seconds to warm up but are well worth it everything is clearer and we dont even need spotties on it.

I want to convert my spotties and standard lights all to hid on my swb and as a plus they dont use as much power as normal halogen lights

Leds are allready using far better technology than hids, allthough a 10 watt led is currently only capable of 800-900 lumens (per led). They do as a rule though have a far superior light colour (6500k) and no delay in reaching full output. Google Genr8 and search for 29-xls1100, 29-xls4100 and 29-xls6100,mind you prices range from $300 for the singles to over $1000 for the bigger units.
