Fuck can you lot try and stop making up reasons for a half story already

there is no thrust bearing when dealing with a clutch, there is a spigot bearing ($5 part) that you need but doesnt come with the kit

there is also a throwout bearing that comes with the kit, its bigger and is what pushes against the pressure plate fingers to release the clutch plate

I bet its making a faint whirring noise when the pedal is out and none when the pedal is in like its an input bearing in the box, dont worry they all do it, they all go away, you can even search here there will be about 4 threads about it

your box isnt likely to need work, tell him to put it back together, adjust the thing properly and be happy with life

I had a post on this issue when I changed my clutch. When I put any sort of pressure on the release fork (hydrolic clutch) the noise went away. I've been patiently waiting for the sound to go away as you said Royce, and the clutch has well and truely clocked up a few 1000km now, but if anything, its a hell of a lot worse. Its squeeling like a pig now all the time. I think it needs to go back in because it never made the noise before and its gotten beyond that point where I would call it bearable. I just hope Suzistore comes to the party with some kind of warrenty. Thats not to say that Royces advice was wrong by any means. I have no doubt that in many cases the noise does go away with time. Its just unfortunate mine hasn't.

My experience with mechanics is that the independant, small business type seem to be the best. They WANT your business, not to mention repeat business and referals. The large chains (ie Holden, Ford etc) workshops I find are far less reliable. You are just a number in many cases. But like anything, you cant tar everyone with the same brush.

How long can they legally string me along and keep my car with excuse after excuse?

I have a friend who said they had his car for over 3 weeks for a simple problem.

Your best bet is to just turn up at the workshop every day till they get sick of you and your car. Don't call, turn up and see for yourself what is going on. Ask to see the parts that they are having issues with.

well, dont want to name names until its been resolved.

They might just be too busy to call and may do it properly in time. If by wednesday i'm still being messed about i'll head down there and see whats happening.

yeah i wouldn't worry about it, sounds like you're getting angry and have no info to go on. They are probably busy. As long as they do it properly it's ok. No point paying a cheap price and it's not fixed.

I think they're always expensive, like every trade, and we hate paying mechanics because we don't see the value. You might have $500 worth of parts, then $700 labour. It's pretty easy to rack up costs like that. Try getting them to work on your diesel engine, easy to get a bill for $3000 - $6000.

well I'm guessing most mechanical workshops charge around $80 - $100 an hour labour. When you factor in the mechanics wages, and the operating costs of the workshop eg rent, electricity, insurance, etc, there would probably be a net profit of around $20 - $30 an hour to the workshop owner

ok, just called them and a new story.

He said that the input shaft isnt as worn as they thought, now they think its the clutch plate. They said the new plate in the kit is bigger than the old one fitted in the car and he has tried several kits but they are all too big so he is waiting on the part.

He mentioned that it wasnt making a noise before i brought it in so there is no point replcaing the input shaft for a quote of $2000.

So hopefully the new clutch he orders is the right size and should have it back tomorrow, but he;s been saying that for days so who knows.

First it was the thrust bearing, then the input shaft then the clutch plate.

By the sounds of he he ordered the wrong clutch kit, it didnt fit now he he waiting for the right kit to come.

Thats my uneducated guess.

From where I'm sitting it sounds like he is trying to do the right thing. My guess is he rung up his supplier and said I want a clutch kit for month/year model Suzuki whatever it is. The parts interpreter on the other end of the phone has sent him the wrong parts, and now he's the meat in the middle of the sandwich while he waits for them to send him the right parts. It has happened to me and I'm guessing most other mechanics a thousand times before.

Don't expect that to stop a parts interpreter from sending the wrong one. Seriously, I reckon some of them close there eyes and point to a number at random in a book and say 'that's the one'

Finally got it back.

Was quoted 795, charged 930.

Then he said lucky i didnt charge you for taking the gearbox out twice.

Not my fault his supplier sent him the wrong clutch kit.

He also said my thrust shaft isnt normal.

It has a worn patch so he put the spigot bearing in front of it and may cause problems later.

Other than that it works fine now.

It has a worn patch so he put the spigot bearing in front of it and may cause problems later. how does this work!? did they give any warranty to their workmanship?

Other than that it works fine now. so..will you go back there? going to name the store in question so other members local to you can avoid/experiance the same service?

Gone Fishing Catch anything!?

Good to hear all is going well..NOW.. :)

He probably added another hours labour for the added hassle of the ordeal.

He said it might be fine, then again, it could cause the clutch to slip.

No warranty, no idea how it works.

I probably would go back there. He charged extra and took 5 days instead of one but i'm in bunbury and bunbury is generally slow. :P
