righto guys,

I have attempted to install a cd player in my coily. and of course, because nothing ever works out, i have ran into problems.

I have installed cd players before and am a bit of a home audio guru, but when it comes to the wiring behind my car cd player, I am so fucking clueless.

I understand all the speaker wires. this is not a problem. The cd player that was with the car when i got it was hooked directly to the batttery and to turn it off you had to remove the faceplate to turn it off.

Now behind the cd player there are a bunch of wires, which when mucked around with and experimented with have:

turned the clock so it only turns on when the accessories turn on
also
turn the dash lights on no matter the position of the key in the ignition or whether i have my front lights on

There is a wire running directly from the battery through the middle of the firewall to the cd player. is it meant to be like this?

It seems something is really amiss, could i get an auto-electrician to get a look at it. Id imagine this would cost alot, can you guys recommend anyone.

If you search for the model number of the headunit, you might be able to find a pinout for it, then you can go from there. Usually there are eight wires to speakers, an earth, a constant battery, an ignition and an electric antenna wire (any ive forgotten?).

yeah mate that info came with the unit. should there be a wire running direct from the battery though, though this would be integrated into some of the existing wiring. It kind of looks like the last guy who installed the last player had no idea what was going on and ripped into wires. like should some of these wires be mucking around with the dash lights and the clock?

ok mate so you are working from the factory loom?
being that its a coily i reckon you wouldnt need to run extra wires, cos even my 1990 vit didnt need it.

to find the wires that you need all you will need is a test light, its an easy step-by-step process, and as you say that you know the speakers well i wont go into that.

you first need your constant power connect your clamp to the earth and the ignition off check the wires and you should find the right one.

then your accessory power go over the wires again with the ignition on, and you will get another wire light up and you have your accessory wire.

then for your earth turn your ign back off and connect to the constant power and check your wires again you may find a few that light up, being a a zook i wont bother going into the power aerial wire, but the lighting one is most likely there (some decks dont use it anymore but its the most common false earth found) so when you think you have found your earth turn your lights on if you loose the earth thats your lighting wire. but of course with the earth you can always just run your own

Get a test lamp and find yourself a constant wire and an accessorie wire, tap into them..problem solvered. I know it's probably not the ideal way bu it has worked for me everytime I have done a stereo. I will look tomorrow exactly what colour I used if you like?

Just wondering, I had a play around with some of these wires and they seemed to be coming from the same loom (I am presuming this is the factory one), are things like my clock and stuff meant to be turning off and dash lights meant to be mucking around or is this expected?

Makes me think there could be something wrong as the car came with the cd player direct to the battery, and perhaps the previous owner picked this problem?

Clock should stay on regardless, sounds a bit suspect I think.

Most late model radios have two supplies , one to keep the memory and little battery in the radio charged , the other to allow the stereo to work when in the accessory position , Cheers Paul.

Need a 12v supply with the ing or acc off, the cig lighter is the beast to tap into as it is already fused, DON'T tap into the head light wire's like the installer of the radio in lil wagon. ( since been fixed)

no this is wrong as it is no longer 1984 and radios dont pull out anymore

I would say there is a line direct to the battery as it has had a decent aftermarket deck in there that doesnt like the piss poor little power supply, if its fat and well run leave it there

anything making clocks and lights turn on is either due to you touching stuff together or there is uninsulated wires back there, get that sorted out first

then like everyone has said, youve got power, run the earth to a decent chunk of steel behind the dash and find a wire that will light a test light up on accessories out of the loom you found the speaker wires, there would be a constant power and earth there but dont use them, if you need illumination (orange on your deck) it will be there as well

righto guys, i have taken on boards alot of your advice and have got it working.

couple of things to clear up, should the clock have a constant power supply even when the car is off or doe sit have own in built battery.

When running the car when i turn my lights on or any accessories liek the fan for example. should rpm drop down considerabely?

With a long muck around the cd player is working when the accessories turn on, and i had a muck around and one of the wires which i didnt know what its prupose was, i attached back to the wire running to the battery and it caused the clock to work all the time, does this sound right?

There is on for a g13ba engine, and it says for us models only, and i got this off suzukiinfo,

there is a suzuki sj413 service manual, with wiring diagrams for european markets and then all other markets,

I also have a haynes manual which i believe has a wiring diagram.

which of these best applies to my coily?

yes the clock has constant power, accesory power, illumination power and earth

dont connect power to any of the factory loom, youll break something, sounds like the wire you are hooking into is an accesory wire

where would i go about finding it?

the wiring diagram that is? I was given a haynes manual for the car but does that cover the sj 80? It says up to 97, and pretty sure it is form overseas where not all coilys were sold.

I would have thought since everything ese was different on a coily, the wiring would be no different...

The whole car was redesigned from the ground up...
