Just bought a thermo from repco today and went to replace it. Pulled the old one out and it had a rubber ring around it and no gasket. The two seem to be a tad different; the origional was a perfect circle with the thermo centered and the repco one was a slight egg shape.

Is there supposed to be some sort of gasket (2 multi-purpose ones came with the thermo)?
I've just put the rubber ring around the new one and put her back together for the time being.

Also, whats the cable that sticks out the front under the thermo, right beside the dipstick? I snapped the clip thing and have temporarly fixed it for now.
Is it the temp guage sensor?

Ummmm, it's a bit dark at the moment. I'll take some in the morning.
It was a black clip that hooked onto the end of a bolt that screwed into the bottom half of the thermo casing on the engine block......if that makes any sense at all.

I've had to go back to Repco to get that rubber gasket before.

They have two listed as suitable for the Vit so if you can take the old one you should be able to match them up. They are about $4 ea or so.

I assume if you use the rubber gasket you don't need the multi-purpose paper one but I'm not sure on that.

Hopefully someone here can teach us both.

Buy a new gasket & use the supplied as ninja stars. :P :P

Yep, that's exactly what it is. Temporarily fixed it with a bit of wire for now :s

I just reused the rubber ring from the old thermo, and there doesn't seem to be any leakages from it yet. I presume the paper gasket is un-needed.
