If I'm to keep my V6 Vitara I'm think that I should fit diff locks to stop me busting another axle, I would prefer an auto locker due to price however I would like feed back on both options. Rear diff is a 4 pin split hemisphere.

Not entirely sure diff locks will stop you busting axles, you'll be putting more strain on them but as a plus there'll be less 'shock loading' breakage. Have you considered just upgrading to an HD set of axles?

...if anything, diff lockers would actually increase the risk of busting axles. open diffs transfer the load to the tyre with the least resistance, whereas lockers transfer power equally...

can please tell me where in Adelaide you busted an axle, i've lunched a CV before but not a rear axle?

the rear is a pretty straight forward job, the front really requires a steel housing & pinion carrier.

change your diff ratios first.

The axle had some help from previous owner, you could see old and new break evidence when axle removed, I finished the job on private property when I bounced the rear end on a very loose up hill run. The idea of the diff lock is to allow me to go further whilst using less right foot. I have not looked recently but originally I had lots of problems with after market parts for this vehicle because it was not sold in the US and that seems to be the main source of parts for suzies. I must admit that when I found that the weakest part of axle was inside the diff side gear and hence damages diff when it breaks I said some very nasty things about Mr Suzuki
