hi all, i have the chance to get a locker for my zook for a good price, but im not sure if it will benefit my zook with little tires and modest lift etc.
i dont like charging through obstacles with speed i prefer to just creep up the obsticals. and just wondering if in a sierra it is a benefit.
from past expeirnce with a hilux a front locker was a major imporvment, But in my zook with no powerstearing im gonna go rear. if i go either at all.
thanks
Jordan

I can't believe you are contemplating not fitting a locker. Regardless of tyre size, lift, whatever, a locker is the biggest single improvement you can make.
The biggest best tyres in the world or the choicest gearing will do nothing for the car if you isn't locked.

Put the lockrite in the front and weld the rear.

Running stock'ish tyres and stock gearing, a locker will completely change the performance of the Zook offroad. I can do 90% or more of Powerlines now (not counting the in-between sections of track) in 2WD Low, only going to 3WD or 4WD for some of the steeper muddier climbs or rock steps.
I wouldn't go a locker though if you're running (say) 235/75R15's with stock gearing. The combination of extra traction and poor gearing will kill you off road. Only go the locker if you're running stock tyres and gearing, or bigger tyres and lower gearing.
Either way you're going to be wishing for lower gearing and (likely) bigger tyres at some stage If you're looking at an autolocker you're welcome to come and have a drive in mine.

You shouldn't need to ask if getting a locker is worth while, it will be worth the money spent regardless of which end you put it on.
As far as tyre wear goes I've been running a rear lockrite locker for many years and I am on 60K with my cheap muddies and the rear tyres have about 1.5mm less tread than the front.
Can you get the Locker through your work any cheaper? Or from Chris any cheap through your work? If not get them direct from the US, should only cost $260AUD including postage.

The couplers replace the originals that are in your diff atm.
If they are in good condition you do not need to replace them.

I have "heard" that using your original side gears can be smoother in operation than using the locker with couplers. I have no idea if this is the case. The couplers may be a bit stronger as looking at photos of the two different types it looks like they have a greater tooth engagement area with the dog clutch.
I wouldn't stress too much either way.

i put a spartan locker in my car (rear) a few weeks back now and its well worth it for 4x4ing, took it out the other weekend and could do most in 2wd. on the road it isnt to bad, get a very quiet clicking noise when turning (can hardly hear it) and in car parks it makes a bit more noise but i'm not fussed, my sierra makes that many noises anyways xD Paid about 250 from lowrange offroad, got it in 10 days from order date

air lockers air open diff and u can lcok them useing air so they would prob be one of the best chocies .but they are expecive ...auto lockers lock up when they sence slipping .. so they can lock up on the road and be a pain in the ass ..then u have weled diffs ..basicly means they are always lockeed .. i woudnt sugest doing this unless ur car is always off road ..

best thing you can do for it is lock it mate
my old soft top sierra was running stock 205s and no lift for a while with a welded rear locker and damn its surprising plus probably the best fun i had in it.
now in my hard top i run welded rear and locrite front(for a week now) and love it,changed the car totally from tests so far.
x2 with steve about massive tyres and flex meaning shit without traction,a few years back we were out wheeling with phil nobles tuff truck winning patrol on 49s,lockers werent working.....lets just say it hopped and bounced where i still think it shouldnt of and my zuk on 31s with rear locker drove the same two gully runs with ease following his lines without any drama.

This is incorrect (it's cool - this is a common misconception about auto lockers)
An auto locker is normally locked. It has to be forced to "unlock."
what happens is as you corner, one wheel has to turn faster than the other. With an auto locker, that wheel decouples and freewheels. if you accelerate, normally, the inside wheel will then slip a bit and the locker locks back in. It takes a bit of "reverse torque" to unlock an outside wheel. On a slippery surface, there isn't always enough traction to unlock the outside wheel
This can mean the locker never really unlocks. That's fine if it's in the back, it just behaves like an expensive spool. In the front, it can make the car a complete pain to drive.
Steve.

I've got an auto locker in the front. It's amazing, you can tell where you wouldn't be getting to without it.
That said, auto locker in the front is fine. Steering is a bit heavier, but as long as you're offroad it's not too bad.
Just don't try u turns on road in 4WD on road >.>

FARK, you should NEVER be using 4wd on a on a road (high traction) surface unless you like destroying your driveline components. Regardless of lockers or whatever you have. You will wind up your driveline bigtime.
