Hey guys,
Before I call the wreckers I thought I'd ask here. Does anyone have a starter motor in good condition that they want to get rid of?
I've read that the 1.3(Sierra) 1.6(Vitara) and 1.8 (baleno) are the same, can someone confirm this.
It's for a a G16B Vitara.
Thanks.

I don't think they are the same, I read that some modification is needed to interchange them...

I had to machine my 1.3 starter to fit on a 1.6 Baleno block. They are definately different.
I have never tried to put one on a vit, but there are many threads saying you have to grind the block or machine the starter for a 1.3 starter to fit.
The 1.6 starter should fit the 1.3, but not the opposite without modification.

It only started to play up after a few water crossings, I think that the gear is getting stuck so I'll pull it out, lube it up and see how it go's.

What a pain in the rectum job, I barely have enough room to swing a spanner in there. I might have to leave it for someone else

HAHAHAHA trust me I am a tight arse. The other day I had to buy new shoes and I only spent $12!!
I really hate spending money on things that arn't seen and especially on things that eat into my roof rack fund.
And yes it SHOULD be easy, but with 1/2" Drive sockets and the spanners I have I can't get to the bolts. I could go and buy stubby spanners, but I probably won't use them again.
I just got back from the auto elecy and it's going to cost me about $200-250 to remove, reco and replace it. Considering it's $165 to reco it, I think it's an ok deal. I called up suzifour and they want $100 exchange for a 2nd hand "unknown condition" item. And it's $285 for a new one.
Rather than just putting a bit of grease on it, At least it'll be like new again and one less thing to worry about.

ive got both a 1.6 vitara and a 1.3 starter in the shed. there the same. but if you have a sierra box mated to the vitara engine the 1.3 starter wont fit. need a fair bit machined off. i think the vitaras came out with 2 differnt starters from what i can work out

So that extra $100 you save doing it yourself, and the $20 spanners you need and the experince that you get for next time and the satisfaction of a job well done and the ability to fix your car if it shits itself in bumfuck nowhere
You get yourself a tank of fuel and six pack for when you get home after going driving all day.

It's closer to $40 for the spanners. I checked out that option too
Having it reco'd would mean there probably won't be a next time, Hopefully It'll last another 130,000km or 20 years time. At least having the same person to Remove, Repair and Replace it, It'l come with warranty.
If it fk's up in the middle of no where, I'm sure a few taps with a hammer would sort it out until I get to civilisation. That's what I've been doing for the last week or so, Just that it's getting worse the longer I leave it.
Yes I'd rather fix it myself, but If I don't have the right tools for the job, I'd rather leave it to someone else before I fk it up. I've had bad experiences in the past in which I've learnt my lesson.

All sorted !!
Turns out my starter was rooted beyond repair but I still got a great deal, $220 for a brand new starter with 2 years warranty incl. labour.
Oh and it was $185 to reco not $165, so basically I only spent an extra $40 for a brand new one.
While I was waiting I came home and won $10 on an online poker tournament
