there is a small round black canister in the engine bay on the drivers side, got a hose going into the top and one out the bottom, any idea what this is and is it needed to be kept or can i chuck it?

Sounds like the carbon canister/ charcoal canister.
Its an emissions thing. It collect fuel vapours from the tank aparently

charcoal canister. its the breathing system for the tank. you can get rid of it but atleast put a filter on the end.

ok cool, thank you, i thought it was a charcoal canister, just dont like taking bits off without knowing for sure.

Yep, but the jim's have a lil canister for the vacuum c*#ts, I mean hub's that lives on the driver's side inner guard..

Are they in the same place for the BB engines AND M's?
I know that certain components in the vitara engine bays jump around between models.
