hey guys,

i'm a noob when it comes to 4x4s and what not, i just recently bought an 89 swb vitara and wanted to know what the difference between H/T and all-terrain T/A tyres are.
i'll be asking more questions so bear with me, i've never modified a 4x4 before but i'm not new to the automotive scene (previously owned b16a civic and 4agte sprinter).

H/T = Highway Terrain, A/T = All Terrain, H/Ts are the muts nuts when it comes to driving on the road but thats all they are good for, A/T on the other hand are the median tyre nice on road hardly any noise and off road are pretty good.

A/Ts are the most common tyre on fourbys.

and the perfect tyre size i have gatherd from this site that you don't need any lift is 235/75 for the vit.

Only if you have a EFI Vitara otherwise I dont go any biggerthan a 225/75/R15 This is mainly due to lack of H.P. on the Carby model for highway driving. I am getting a set of 215/75/R15 Cooper ATR's for my Stock'a Vit which is carby. I was quoted around the $180ea. The 225/75/R15 Cooper ATR are about $205 - $210 ea Good tyre with a great warrenty.

If your not wanting to spend that much go for a MAXXIS AT which are still a great tyre at only $155ea for a 225/75/R15

sp1086 the skuz box that is my zook is 1.6 carby and it pushes 235's around pretty easy and my MAXXIS tyres only costed around $137 each.

Or if you want wider tyres but same diameter as a 225/75 go a 235/70R15 don't know how hard they are to find but it will have stance and wont throw the speedo out much along with being easier to spin

And i own same thing as you mate 89 SWB Vitara 1.6 carby

Yeah I mainly am staying with a 215/75 for legallity & insuence reasons.

Hi All, thanks for the replies.

I'm from Sydney, i noticed that alot of the guys on the forums are QLDers.
my vitara has 30x9.5 nankang H/T tyres on the front and 30x9.5 BFG A/T on the back. I bought it like that so don't ask me why it is...
I guess it shouldnt worry me too much because for now its my daily driver to the traino and back home which is only about an 8 minute drive.

I don't intend to take it offroading but later on when its in better shape I'll have a bit of fun.

do ya have any trouble with the car turing the 30's?

lots of people have 31s on a standard geared Sierra (1.3L carby)

i can't really say because i have no comparison, but what i've noticed driving the vitara is the steering is surprisingly lighter then what i would have expected.
the acceleration is shit, but i didnt buy it to win any drag races. it struggles abit to get to 60km/h but i don't floor the accelerator pedal to get there.

i have some questions, do soft top JLX vitaras come with air con?
i thought JLXs would, but having air con in a soft top is pointless, right?

also my vitara doesnt have manual hubs (correct terminology?), i don't need to get out of the car and 'lock' the hubs (again, terminology?). why is this? has an aftermarket part been put in? i told you i was a noob.

heres another a few questions:

so the driver side power window switch isnt working. the passenger side window switch also doesnt work. does the passenger side run off the driver side?

is there supposed to be a fusebox for the citara? i know theres one in the engine bay next to the battery and should there be anothter one in the driver/passenger footwells?
the haynes manual does nothing for me, unless i'm reading the wrong area or there is no other fusebox.

I dont think any vitara came out with aircon standard, they were a factory option, but not sure, anyone got a jlx without aircon?

some vitaras had auto hubs fitted standard, they may be a good idea but they are also funny to play up and being able to unlock the front driveshafts when you want is useful if you damage something in the front driveline

i have a 91 jlx swb soft top and has no factory air con and i had the same problem with the elec windows had to replace the whole switch wish cost a heafty 170 bucks. the driver window tends to leak while raining and water drips directly onto the main window swich happens in mine and 1 of my mates with same model vitara.

joyride... Take that puppy and point it down the nearest muddy road you can !!!

No real point in getting a 4B and not taking it off road !!

Once you have taken her down a few fire trails. It will be hard to stop you from heading back out again !

I am 1.5 hours South of Sydney in the Southern Highlands and we have tracks that are rated From AWD Magna to Hilux with Lockers..

We can find a trail that you will enjoy and be able to flex the Vits suspension...

As for Acceleration, my Folks 91 SWB 5 Speed is pretty nimble.. a set of Extractors really brought it to life...
my LWB is Fuel injected and its not as nimble lol!
