Just a legality question that I was unable to find the answer to. So in Queensland it seems we are only allowed a measly 15mm in rolling diameter increase. It also seems that mod plating larger tires is something that is not done. So what to do, is there any legal way to run larger tires on a zook in Queensland.

I mentioned this somewhere else and there was the idea that with an axle swap (hilux) you could legally run the tire sizes of the doner vehicle. But then I read that having such a swap mod plated was impossible. Has anybody in Queensland had a zook mod plated with hilux axles?

This isn't something I plan on doing, just asking questions to get my head around the options available. Ideally all I want is to keep the 2inch lift I have now and run 29 or 30 inch tires. But I want it to be legal.

nope, if there was a way to do it we all would

hilux in theory fails due to track increase being more than a sierra was to begin with

you could have them tested to whatever ADR's are applicable and get a cert for it but the cost would be higher than any amount of fines you could possibly get

I was thinking maybe the mod plate would also allow for the increase in track but obviously not. It isn't the fines that would bother me as I highly doubt they would ever pick up 29 inch tires. It is the insurance I worry about. After having to make my first insurance claim recently I am trying to make sure if it is ever needed again a claim would not be rejected due to oversized tires.

In theory insurance cannot refuse a claim based on tyre size if they didnt contribute to teh crash, though arguing they dont reduce the efficiency of the brakes or handling would be hard

I know of 2 people with too big tyres that had claims put through no worries

so if i put wt diffs under my nt zook does this mean i can go bigger seeing as the width is increased, but that would mean i would need to mod plate the driveline

i run over 30s as it is anyway for a few years now as long as the covered by flares

actually according to my engineer, if you get axles mod plated under your car, you pick up the max tyre size for the axles

Think you may have misunderstood what I meant Bazook. Tires the size of the donor vehicle.

i got you so if you use hilux diffs you can use hilux tyre size,

it also works the other way.

i.e i have an lj81 which came out with 600-16 tyres. basicly 28 inch tyres

i have grafted wide track axles under it, the wide track came out with 205s so baasically 26s

thus my legal tyre size for the LJ is now 26s +/- 15mm

tyre legal size has never really worried me though

I just bought my sierra with 29's on it and it came with a roadworthy so they can't be too fussed about it.

Does anyone here know what kind of league we're talking if you actually do manage to get fined for having too large tyres on a vehicle?

I like the hilux axle idea, that is a clever way to get around it. What is the max size for hilux axles?

What model Hilux? The first LN46 models came out with 7.50-16 Road Trak Majors (32 inch). Most models came out with 205R16 Road Grippers (app 29 inch) on split rims, with some SR5 versions having 255/70R15 Grandtreks on Chromies (29 inch)
