Hi Guys,

what is the biggest engine (preferably Suzuki) that anyone on this forum fitted into a Vitara?

I was talking to someone about Toyoga 4AGZE & Nissan SR20DE & DET, but they suggested sticking with Suzuki. 4 options entioned, in order of his preference. I think his preference was based on how good he thought the engines were.

1) Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 2.5Liter - H25A - Power 106kW @ 6200rpm Torque 208Nm @ 3500
2) Suzuki Liana Liana 1.8Liter - M18A - Power 92kW @ 5500rpm Torque 170Nm @ 4200rpm
3) Suzuki Baleno GTX 1.8Liter - J18A/G18A - Power 89kW @ 6200rpm Torque 152Nm @ 3400
4) Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.0Liter - J20A- Power 94kW @ 6000rpm Torque 174Nm @ 2900

Just looking for a drive in drive out deal, and really not sure which engine to go with.

SV420 Vitara's have the J20a standard, what are you reasons for doing the conversion?

It all really depends what your plans are. For most people with the general wheeling, the 2l and 1.6l engines are more then capable.

As for going Suzuki, it all depends what you want. By all means, go for a commodore v6 or small block v8 if you want. Some people just like keeping there suzukis....suzuki

& others just like to fruck em... 8O

In a comp car yes. In a road car no. The V6 3.8 buick shitbox that holden subjected us to for a decade or more is the worst motor choice for a light suzuki. And a shitty old pushrod small block aint any better.

I think the SR20DET would have more power, and potential for power, but half the weight, physical dimension and capacity. This would better suit a comped Vitara IMO.

no there are engines that make sense in a zook, a fucking big heavy one isnt one of em, the weight alone (if it stays running long enough) is jsut going to pound the front end to shit in no time

What the fuck?? No, I've just got an open mind to what's possible and what isn't.

As for front end breakages, it's true if your still running stock I guess. We run a gq front end, so it's not as bad.

In G-wagons' absence I will add.......

Just because something CAN be done, doesn't mean it SHOULD. 8)

I speak from experience here too. I have done the commy V6 into a sierra as a wannabe comp rig and it had more con's than pro's.

the reason is that the 1.6L is not giving me the power I am after, and I am about to go 32's, so it will get even worse.

I was looking in to getting head work on my engine, and to bore our the bottom to somewhere between 1690cc - 1750cc but the cost of doing this is more than a basic conversion which would give me more. I figured if I am doing the conversion I may as well not cut corners, and so I need to narrow it down to 2 options.

I think that Suzuki Liana (M18A) came with forged rods, so I am thinking this could make it a better engine than the J20A. Really not sure.

Specs:[u]
bore is 83.0 mm
stroke is 83.0 mm.
This engine has a variable valve timing valvetrain. With a 9.6:1 compression ratio

Hey Fatzook,
this thread became a warzone. Could you please help mop this up by letting us know which of the 4 Suzuki engine conversion options would work best for me?
PS: J20A is not making too much sense for me as a conversion, because if I wanted to do that I could sell the car I have and buy a 2L 4cyl SWB Vitara that has that engine.

Not sure I'm qualified to mop this up, but I'll have a crack at it.

Forget the M-series motors. There is no viable gearbox options for that motor. It may be possible to make an adapter between the vit box and the M18, but you will be pioneering this enterprise. $$$$$

Forget the J20/H20. Not enough power/ torque to justify the effort IMO. ( for a vitara anyway....) I'd be seriously looking at the H25 or H27. Both motors will be VERY tight on the rails. Your transmission tunnel should accept the gearbox from either of these motors, but you may require a custom gearbox mount/ crossmember. You will most certainly need custome engine mounts. You may get away with using the OEM exhaust manifolds, but as I mentioned before, they will be tight on the chassis rails.

Thats your suzuki options.

Personally I think an SR20DET would be easier to fit, approve, and upgrade in the future than any of the above.

And the most important part of all of this conversion crap, is to find an engineer who is willing to sign off on it at the end.

Each to their own I guess. I'm yet to be proven how it's a bad engine choice in a comp vehicle. We run one in our comp Zook, and will possibly be running one in the 4runner soon too. Easy to work with and common enough to be cheap as chips when they go bang.

But in the same sense, the comp zook is pushing around a fair bit of extra weight and will more then likely end up a winch truck, where speed is important.

don't the commy V6 motor kill the crank angle sensor all the time when used off road?

just some lite entertainment. A Suzuki Sierra Submarine brought to you by you tube:

Submarine Sierra

I am getting more precise quotes this Friday on the various conversions so I can decide what to go with.
So far the indication I have on what the quotes would be are:

M18A supplied, fully installed, mated to 5sp Vitara Auto with overdrive button. The gearbox is also supplied. Wiring harness and ECU all fitted, tested, and rego papers taken care of. So drive in drive out roughly $2400.

It has also been indicated that the 2.5 V6 would be roughly $5000, and that would include several other upgrades including breaks.

So far leaning towards the M18A, as my budget is $3500max. Perhaps the SR20DET is something that he may be wiling to attempt.

Who are you getting the quotes off? Sounds an ok price for a drive in drive out.

The M18 price sounds like they have left something off.

The parts alone would cost that much, if not more... :?
