hey guys...so i narrowed down my search for jimny to an 00-04' model JLX but it seems hard trying to find the right model with right kms on the market. they all seem quite pricey!
i'm now thinking of looking a bit newer. 05-08' JLX (or newer), but wasn't too sure about any probs with having the push button transfer setup
then the budget would have to stretch a little further again.
are they a problem area on the Jimnys, i've done some searching on here with a few stories of wiring playing up and causing issues.
would this be a reason to steer clear and hold out for an 00-04 model?
thanks!!

I have had no issues with the push bottom or auto locking hubs, but the only thing i have heard of going wrong is the auto locking hubs, which can be replaced with manual locking hubs.

yup - although if you decide to do reduction gears the lever jimny is easier to do a sierra tcase swap on... however the push button jimny is VVT =)

yeah the new ones re VVTs so better engine, and you wont have to do 4000rpm to get to 100k/h
but apparently vvts have more issues with the gearbox
and well like they say do a sierra swap is easier with early models... the new ones still have the hole in the floor for the liver, but zukenuker is trying and there is a lot of diferences in gearbox-transfer, so it would be hard
but there is the trialjimny if you want
In my case I choose a pre 04, because I wanted the liver, I dnt trust much in a button, also becasue I could fold one seat flat at a time, pretty handy for my surfboard or other stuff

I was doing the maths the other day, and for the 20% trail jimny gears to bring the gearing right you would need to run at least 31"s but even then it would still be over geared i think. There is kits that you can buy to do a straight up conversion from D&G tuning and off-road armoury but you need $$$ for them.
Also the VVT is a great engine.

yeah i hear you re: the rear seats. i test drove an 08 model yesterday arvo. i recall the pre 04 models bench part of the seat folds differently?
its no biggie though. but would be alot better if it was 'flat' for when we go camping etc.
i think losing the lever and gaining vvt is making me alot easier in buying a newer model.
the wish list has already begun!!

don't pull it apart unless you follow the manual TO THE LETTER, or you will spend hr's trying to trick the control module into thinking it's in 4wd.
The actuator's don't like.. water, rock's, branch's, sand, bunnings car park's, cat's, being used.
One sensor can throw the whole thing out. ( suck if your in the bush)
The scyncro's in 4wd like to poop..
Tiss all I can think of ATM..

Ok thanks.
But i'm yet to have trouble with mine, even after a really big water crossing, lots of beach driving, driving over logs and though the bunnings car park to the repco car park.
Also if it dose shit it self i will put in a W/T t-case.

remember those kits re built for non vvt jimnys.... as zukenutter describes in his findings/process there is a lot of differences between the two models in gearbox, transfer case, outputs, shafts, etc........ it might have a different mounting points too, dnt remember hehe
woop!

To say two might be too much though...
Point is if you want to give someone else shit for their spelling, grammar, punctuation or anything else, you better make fucking sure you get it right yourself.

Yeh mate still learning. i'll try find out more about these conversion kits, alot of guy's on the UK forums have done them. Edit: Just had a reply from the guy who runs the bigjimny fourm
Yes you can fit these kits. You have to do a quick re-wire to keep the flashing lights on the dashboard happy. I know the UK VVTs to at least 2007 have the hole in the transmission tunnel required for the transfer lever blanked off so you can unbolt the plate and you have the correct hole. You would probably want the console from an older Jimny to tidy up the edges of the hole neatly. Martin
I asked which is the correct kit to order, just waiting on a reply now.

Ok for the ORA kit to work in the VVT jim you need to do some rewire for dash lights and the jack shaft needs to be cut and re-welded.

I just blocked the both air pipes with bit of silicon where they join the arms this seemed to suck in the computer into thinking the air hubs were still connected and fixing the flashing 4x4 light.
I have the 2001 stick transfer model through.
Maybe Monkey can do the experiment on his, by blocking the pipes temporarily.

I don't think it's to bad actually
195.00 EUR = 269.030 AUD
Plus postage which would be about $120 i think

Our kit is fully bolt on and comes complete with fitting instructions and all the mounting hard wear you need for a successful installation.
All ORA transfer boxes are fully serviced, and assembled with new bearing, seals and gaskets throughout, all in all making your transfer box a very worth while investment that will give you years of hassle free off-road crawling!
