Hi All,

I have blown my rear diff a few weeks ago and having troubles pulling out the axle.

The things I have tried:

* Hitting the axle with a hammer and let vibrations work its magic to wiggle it out
* Putting timber on the back of the drum backing plate and hitting it with a hammer
* Undoing the diff centre bolts and wiggled that around to loosen it from the axle
* Sheer brute force
* Putting the drum brake on backwards and again use brute force
* Some more sheer brute force

I know I haven't really tried that many methods but it just seems to be permanetly stuck.
Someone else has suggested I bolt my tyre back and and wack it with a sledge hammer but I think the car is going to come off the stands if I attempt to.

Are there any other methods that have worked for people here? the zook looks so lonely in the garage on stands.

I can also offer tinnies or some cash for someone who is up for helping me get this out

hey man i had some prob i ended up putting tyre on and wacking it but just make sure that ur car is secure and wont fall ontop of u .. also make sure the center is bolted up and just take a huge back end of axe or sledge poped of 2nd hit.. but in saying that i could not swing hard enuf to do it a mate manged to do it ..

I got hold of a slide hammer and welded on a wheel nut, wind the nut onto the axle stud and tap it off, so much more easy (and safe) than brute force.

you could manufacture a dodgy slide hammer with a length of chain and a besser block if you get my drift

The way zooks used in mud with bigger than stock tyres go through wheel bearings I thought a proper slide hammer was worth it, especially with the number of Zooks at my place.

I get your drift and hopefully i can make something out - i cant really see the difference in hammering the back and making a dodgey slide hammer.

how much do you think a diff specialist will smash this out for?

ok guys i have procrstinated a little too much and the old man has cracked the sads from the zook being in the garage for a bit.

i've tried to slide hammer technique and there is still not luck,

can someone please let me know if i will damage my tyre if i wack it with a sledge hammer? If i hit the rim it will put it out of balance right?

Do the old chain or rope trick as suggested, put a chain or rope around something heavy (or the end of your sledge) other end around the part you're trying to remove, and swing away jack!

I used a much heavier chain, and no sledge, it worked ok.

One we had was no way, not coming out. I learned that if you heat the bearing cup, and heat it real good with a propane torch (not an oxy-ace) that they will come out with one blow from the chain.

Give some heat (and plenty of it too.) on the bearing cup a try right before you try your new chain/sledge combo. think you will be surprised.

the chain technique was the only way i even got mine out, we used a wood splitter on the end of the chain lol

We actually used two trucks to get on out, it was bad. My neighbors must have loved me.

We had one 88-ish full size Chevy tied to the axle to come out, and my full size 94 long bed Chevy filled with scrap metal in the driveway, chained to the housing.

We tried pulling gentle and it did not work, so we hit it hard. it took about 6 or seven blows and drug my truck 3 feet sideways before it popped.

My rig was sunk in the water, and the diff oil was not change while it sat for a year lol.

Did I mention the neighbors hate me? lol.. they learned not to make me upset or comment about me working during the daylight hours though. The raw power of an un-muffled 1.6 sounds awful good in the early AM on Sundays. (almost as good as a grinder on a thin piece of tin) armsup armsup

I smashed a CW & P just before christmas and tried all the chain/brake drum/sledgehammer/ etc tricks to remove the LH axle and none worked...
I ended up going to Glenfords and buying a slide hammer... $190

Worked a treat and makes any future axle pulling so much easier...

I actually used the link Royce gave me. Used a thick chain and a massive sledge hammer. After about 10 minutes of trying I spat the dummy and kicked the rock slider. Hurt my foot and got even more worked up and tried one more time. Popped out and landed on that same foot.
Think my car is possesed at the moment. Will post up a photo of the diff centre sometime soon. Thanks all for your help

i had to get an axle out of my spare Lj diff, was stuck in good and proper, wasnt in need of the axle or anything, so i gave it to swift hits on the backing plate,
with FBH and it came out easily,
couldn get it out any other way tho
