Recently my vit has been getting warmer than normal. Usually the temperature does not climb higher than 1/3 on the temp gauge.

Lately I have found it sits around 1/3 and up to half before the thermostat opens. This happens on both highway and around town.

Naturally I thought old sticky thermostat. So I replaced the thermostat last night, gave the system a flush and added new coolant. Went for a spin and straight up to halfway she goes on the gauge then drops back to 1/3 then warming to half and dropping again. This is continuous.

Now my question to all the G16a owners is what position or range does your normal operating temp sit on the gauge. Cheers!

That's how mine used to be. I wonder why it is going up all of a sudden? I'm guessing impellor on water pump is cactus?

mine actually runs too cold sometimes. Like when i was driving to Thredbo last week from sydney, my heater wasnt working because the engine wasnt getting hot enough, as soon as i slow down to around town or up hills it heats up nicely.

Another possibility is the mud run we done a couple of weeks ago. I could have chocked the radiator up with mud and shit. I might pull the shroud off and have a sticky beak.

Radiator has been thouroughly cleaned on the out side with no change in temp. I think I may have internal restriction.

New radiator here I come!

i had a similar issue a while back... went to auto one store and bought an I.R temp gun - took readings on all the various hoses, thermostat housing etc and engine was running at its hottest (ie half way on the gauge when it normally reads 1/3) at 90 degrees C.

i'd suggest grabbing one of these great toys and carrying it around for a while to measure the temp in various conditions.

its also handy when cooking, and checking how much hotter a fart is than the normal air in the room =)

Mine ended up being the timing belt had skipped 2 teeth.

Unlikely, I'm pretty sure it would just work or not work. It could be a wiring or ground issue though. Grounding issues can make the gauges read differently. As you mentioned though first things first I'd check the radiator for mud. Especially since it started happening after a mud run. Either way halfway isn't too hot. In the past mine has run that on the beach for hours on end, had it up past 3/4 without it boiling when the radiator needed a recore too.

Ignore the guage. Its only an indication at best. If you want to know what is ACTUALLY happening with the cooling system, use an infra red or contact thermometer to test the water temp. The OEM gauge could shift 10mm for a 2 degree increase in water temps. Conversly it could shift half a needle width, but be near on boiling the water from the engine.

Don't trust that POS guage.

this is what I'm thinking. What is the normal operating temp for the g16a.

80-90 degrees?

even at 160kph mine sits on 1/2

get the temp gun, i got a cheapy off ebay and tested it with a good one. works well.

by the way my vitara is 69 deg at the thermostat housing with a new 82 deg thermostat. head is 101. i am going to put a theromstat in that opens when hotter because its running on the cold side

My vit has a 92* thermostat,
Thats how it was.
Temp gauge still says cold,
but I think buting a sender from Supercrap was a bad idea
