what generally stops working on these hubs? the passenger side one seems to be working, well its not clicking anyway!!

Dozens of threads on auto hubs. Not sure that your problem is unique.

first 2 threads are on jimny hubs, not sure if they are the same as vitara.
the third one is a question whether ya can have auto hubs with an auto locker. the 4th one is whether to have auto or manual hubs and the 5th one is about the v6 model which from reading the thread seems it doesnt have auto hubs but a drive plate or something.
i admit i dont know anything about how these dam vitaras work, but i am trying to work it out.
if nothing ever goes wrong with these hubs then perhaps it is the cv clicking, but i stood next to the wheel and it sounded liek it was coming from the hub.

check you CV joint to see if it's damaged, could be a simple fix of remove & replace.

Normal problem is thick grease like tar and or the grease is brown from water / rust just get a set of Free wheeling hubs and put them on.

if the CV is properly dead, you should be able to grab the 1/2 shaft & "stir the pudding" inside the CV cup.
