it Idles sometimes but not allways, conks out when I stop / pull up at the lights, and back fires when I back off the accelerator.. I have checked the distributor / dizzy / all that kind of stuff and its all good... I'm thinking something in the carby is gone? it still goes hard but yeah...

any ideas as to what else it would be?

Sounds like shit in your idle jet, try swapping leads 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. Run the car till it back fires a few times, swap them back and see if it fixes it. If it does you should probably pull the carby down and clean it all out or it will more than likely happen again.

Also run a timing light over it. Belt may have skipped a tooth.

Sounds fuel related. Could defiantly be a blocked idle jet or a vacuum hose come off/cracked.

skipped tooth would give symptoms 100% of time and would have power loss.

mmm had a similar issue a month ago...Stop at lights and it would stall, running rough, then would run perfect..I didnt have it backfire however -I checked and paid out to replace everything I could think of...took it to an old school mechanic and it turned out to be a massive amount of crap in the fuel tank being pushed in to the carby ...damaged the carby so i smashed on a 180 holley - works a dream

not trying to be rude or anything but my advice with carbys if u do not know what ur doing dont touch them send them in for proper cleaning u could run some additive in your fuel that may clean it out though it may cost a few hundred but atleast u know its done right im sure the boys on here know a carby specialist near u

Firstly try one of the normal methods... Either swap the leads so it backfires as stated, or take the airbox off the carby, give it a good rev then cover the throat with a rag, which hopefully will suck out any crap in the jets.

If this does fix it, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to strip it and clean it, but it may be worth figuring out where it came from. A small inline fuel filter between the pump and carby won't hurt either...

Ok so we've swapped the leads and back fired it about 10 times, we tried to suck the crap out by covering the air intake (made it choke three times by doing that) and neither of those methods made any difference. We checked all the leads / spark plugs and they'r all good.. :/

Thinking of taking it to B and P car care at Everton hills to get them to sort it for me.. unless anyone has any better ideas / wants to volunteer to fix it for a 6 pack or a few $$...

I just want to be able to drive my carrrrr lol

Just be careful of you don't ruin the gaskets unless you plan on replacing them

Get a carb kit and take it slowly. You could check to see its not flooding either, sometimes fuel starving symptons are in fact over fuelling

idle jet 66 matches on the forum. Read some of these posts cause they are exactly ythe same as yours. Its something about pulling something out and cleaning it.

how did u end up goin myles, what ended up being the problem. My 97 coily is doing the same thing, i recently put a new reconditioned motor in and was running good for 3 weeks then problems......cheers mick

Hey mate, yeah I took Rusho's advice and went up to Carb Tech Automotive near Kippa Ring. They honestly coulden't believe how much shite they found wrong with it Aparently my idol solenoid was rusted over and not making contact properly, the jets were full of crap, it wasn't tuned right, the choke wasn't working properly, the seal on the bottom was worn and creating a vacume sucking in dirt, the accelerator cable wasn't pulling right etc etc etc. They actually had to strip quite a few parts off a donor carby to get mine going right

They quoted me $400 before they looked at it though, so in the end it didn't end up being all that expensive, and I was really happy with all the work they did It's running like a dream now

They charge something like $270 for a rebuild if you take your carby in in a box, or $400 if you want to take your car in and leave it there for a day or two (they tune it to perfection as well)

Yeah that's what the guys at my local mechanic quoted me, but they were going to send it away to get rebuilt and it was going to take ages... At least the guys i went to did it themselves and it was ready the next day

I really didn't want to spend $400 on it, but after waiting around for a good 6 weeks hoping that a 2nd hand one would turn up in good running order (good luck with that ) I decided to just bite the bullet and get it done.. And I'm glad i did. In the end it's worth spending a little bit extra to know that it's all being done properly

mine went in yesterday, spent a few hours in the shop, rebuilt carby and retuned it, goes great again......cant wait to get out again
